I think our fanbase is lacking as well, but for a different reason.
I don't think that what is said on a message board affects the play of a team one iota; other than possibly creating enough negative stir that it makes its way onto mainstream media...and then change may possibly happen within a coaching staff. Other than that, i don't think what is said on a message board does anything other than stir up the others on said message board.
I also think that most (not all) of the engineers I work with or have worked with are cheap, frugal bastards. And they don't spend money and/or time on season tickets and being in the seats. Like it or not, UGA fans may be dumb as hell to most of you but they put fannies in the seats. And those fans being loud can certainly affect the outcome of games.
