ATHENS, Ga. — Athens police say an officer found a drunken 20-year-old University of Georgia student who tried to drive home after a party passed out at a stop sign with the car still running.

The officer found the woman about 2 a.m. Sunday asleep — with the car still in drive. The officer put the car in park and turned off the engine.
When the woman awoke a few minutes later, she told police she'd been drinking at a house party earlier that night.
The woman, who was not identified, was charged with a DUI and underage drinking.

Shoot, that could've happened to me. And I went to GT. not much of a story if you ask me...and not football related at all.

This thread fails. You could've as easily replaced "UGA" with "GT" and "Athens" with "Atlanta" and kept everything else the same and I wouldn't have batted an eye.

But the article in the national news is about UGA, and not GT, and so we get to point and laugh.

And DUI's aren't really that funny unless they involve charismatic former NBAers looking for sex.

so i get ragged on for liking Hines Ward who has redeemed himself with many many seasons with the Steelers, but then when something funny is in the news about Georgie you guys tell me that its not news and its not funny???

strange...

That's just it, this wasn't funny.

I have to go with Rodzilla on this. I mean yeah it's Georgia and it's ridiculous circumstances but the fact that it could be the same for many I know at GT detracts from the humor.

you guys are saying it is common for someone to be so drunk that they fall asleep at a stop sign while driving home? it could happen to you? ok, please let me know when you are out driving drunk and i will stay home, cause that means you are driving totally blized or you ate a xanex or vicks nighttime capsules just for good measure

but, since you all seem to be so myopic on this issue, the greater laugh comes from thinking "why would a national news service write a story about a "drunk coed from UGA" if it is so common" other than to infer that they are making a statement of the greater view of UGA in the Americany psyche. as in, "check out the drunk sorority chick at the party school"

Yeah that's true, but if you knew as many people currently at GT who drink a ridiculous amount you'd know what I mean

Nobody here said it could happen to them. I was saying that if the same thing happened at any other college in the country I wouldn't be surprised at all.

The part that makes this story funny is that the 20 year old coed is identified as "M. Stafford".

You guys are pathetic and you all make me sick to my stomach.

It's Georgia, you douche bags. Something happened at their expense, so it's funny. Lighten the **** up.

OK, I'll play.

Why was it posted on the football board?

Possible answers:
a) because its the only board that anyone reads
b) because the source of our hate for Georgie is driven by our rivalry with them in football
c) because the girl was driving home from a football watching party
d) because before taking the girl to jail, the officers huddled up before deciding to sack her, causing fumbling and a loss of down

Drunk University of Georgia Girl Falls Asleep at Wheel, Slapped with a DUI

If there are two things that college students love, they’re drinking and sleeping. These are the sorts of things you can do everyday, Sunday through Saturday, and go along just great whether you’re feeling like the happy, carefree college student you are or a whiny little depressive. One might even reason that both activities are simply fulfilling the human survival instinct, as they can help you forget about your vast college woes (think debt, bad grades, a bad game, a bad relationship.)

That said though, there are times when the two just shouldn’t go together. And there are other activities that shouldn’t be combined with the them also. One of those activities is driving, as one University of Georgia student recently discovered. The girl, who is (shock!) an underage drinker was this weekend an underage drinker, driver, and sleeper. That’s just asking to get arrested.

Police arrived on the scene early Sunday, conceivably after the Saturday night college routine. The girl was passed out over the wheel at a stop sign, drunk as a skunk, and so very busted. It was the kind of situation that brings to mind the notorious photo of Lindsay Lohan (okay, so there are more than a few of these floating around the internet and gossip rags) where she’s passed out in a car wearing a hoodie with her mouth gaping open. Attractive? Not so much.

The Associated Press reports:

Yeah it’s bad passing out in the bathroom of a grimy dive bar. Yeah it’s bad passing out on the toilet of a frat house bathroom. But it’s hard to come up with many places worse to fall asleep than in a running car in Georgia. And trying to explain to your parents that you got arrested for a DUI while underage because you fell asleep drunk driving is hardly the kind of thing that’s going to make them want to give you money, a later curfew, or a brand new shiny Corvette. Unless they’re as stupid as you.

Buzz Czar, I have to give you credit on the Hines Ward connection.

A very high percentage of DUI cases are originally found where a person is asleep at the wheel at an intersection or driving too slow (or fast). Most think it's weaving but often it's just stupidity brought on by drinking.
