Haha, oh wow

Soon as I saw that I immediately discount all their other rankings. From everything I've seen the only reason to put UGA in the top 15 is to go with the "UGA is great, their players have 5 stars, no way they could actually be down" idea. Now I can see people saying they will be better than it might seem, but they were a 10-20's team last year when they should of been number one. They are replacing their best running back, quarterback, and experience wide reciever as well as other position. Nothing this spring showed they would be able to top last year, their spring game was as bad as ours in 2008 for offense.

I want to say thank god these guys only post rankings that are their opinion and don't affect real life stuff because they basically threw proven **** out the window with this one. However, I know that the people that do actually make rankings that aaffect real life would probably do similar or worse.

I am actually offended that they are trying to pass this prediction off as reasonable.

I'm serious.

Well, the gagers do have a lot of talent. Nothing new.

What is new, and perhaps a concern, is their off season was not full of arrests.

Well they do return a very stout offensive line that was patchwork last year due to injuries and/or suspensions.

I agree, #5 is still high, but they could be good. I hope to God not though.

There is always a debate in my head as to whether I want uga to lose every game because I despise them, or whether I want to them to win out prior to playing us because when we beat them it will make us look that much better.

This year I would like to see them miss out on a bowl game.

I wanna see the fanbase start doubting St. Richt. It won't happen unless there is an 8-4 or worse regular season, but one can hope. Games that COULD or will lose are:

Oklahoma State
South Carolina
Arkansas
LSU
Tennessee
Florida
Auburn
Georgia Tech

OSU is a toss up, South Carolina, Arkansas, Auburn, and Tennessee are likely not, LSU and Georgia Tech are little slanted against them, and Florida is an automatic loss.

They have a lot of talent based of scout rankings*

We only have those pathetic 2 and three star kids like Cooper, Griffin, and Roddy Jones. Unfortunately while they have "talent" like Caleb King, we were "stuck" with Dwyer...if we could only get 5 star commits...

Like I said thousands of times before. Scout sucks, Rivals sucks, they all are about nothing but their opinion and making money.

The star ratings are a joke. But some people (and a lot on here) start their day by reading Newberg's latest phone conversation with this or that recruit.

I don't think #5 is a ridiculous preseason ranking for UGA for two simple reasons: (1) they are loaded all over the field; (2) what teams at this point should be considered better? Well, four of them are ranked 1-4 on that list and the only other one in my opinion is Alabama (#11). I don't think it's unreasonable to say that UGA has a better outlook than any other team. It's as reasonable as any other prediction. The sad truth is that they (like us) are capable of winning every game on their schedule.

I'm not going to throw stones at a publication that generally favors Tech.

UGA could be a top team this year. They are still loaded with talent and their offensive line returns (plus). Sure their skill players on offense are unknowns but they are still very talented.

Most importantly, look at who they play:

Auburn, DOWN right now.
USCe, DOWN right now.
TENN, DOWN right now.
KY, stinks.
Vandy, UP but had their big year last year.
ARK, DOWN right now.
ASU, DOWN right now.
LSU, Unknown but they play in Athens.

OSU, Let's be honest. They are a notch below UGA and are really an unknown but could be tough in Ok.

UF, UP right now.
GT, UP right now.

The point is that UGA is an up program right now and they play so many teams that are down and get LSU at home. They could easily go 9-3, and with one win over UF, LSU, GT could go 10-2.

That word sir, is why I really do not like them at a top 5 ranking. That high up they don't have to beat a higher ranked team to go the national championship game, they just have to not lose. Loaded with talent is fine and all but teams like Miami teach us that being "loaded with talent" can only get you so far. Now I'm not say that Richt is Randy Shannon but you get the idea.

Someone said "well who do we put in front of them?".
Well Alabama is one (which you mentioned). Even though I don't think they're as high either but I'd put VT over UGA in rank. Also I have to say Oklahoma St.
If they aren't deserving of a high ranking then how can we hope to be right now? They're getting attention because a powerful offense returns lots of skill players (sound familiar?) and one of their main questions is if they'll have a good enough defense to not make every game a shootout (which more than on person on this board has suggested of us).

Either Virginia Tech or Bama will be 0-1 to start the season. So, it seems that you would agree that if UGA beats Okla St on the road, UGA could reasonably be ranked as high as #6 in week 2 polls. If UGA beats Ok St soundly and one of the other Top 5 teams has an awful performance against a poor team, UGA could reasonably be ranked in the top 5. It's therefore not unreasonable to put them preseason #5 or #6 if you project them to beat Okla St. Based on my lifetime experience of watching football, I am unfortunately about 85% sure that UGA will beat Okla St. Any odds mavens care to project what the line will be in the UGA @ Ok St game? I'm thinking Okla St -1.5 or something like that. I will be so happy if I am wrong, but I think the Dawgs will win by 10.

The point I should've made is that I don't think they should be able to reach top 5 after the first week. Take Bama last year for example. They completely whooped a top 10 team but that didn't get them into the top 10. I feel the same about Georgia. Unless the magically do the same thing to Oklahoma St., there has been absolutely nothing from the time they lost to us that shows they deserve a top 10 spot and a number of things that shows they don't.

Also, your close certainty of an UGA win there I find discouraging, because if you look hard at things Oklahoma St. is pretty similar to us this year. Most of our hope is being placed on the offense and both lost two offensive linemen (though the three remaining there may be more certain than our returning 5). No one outside our fanbase and players believes our defense will be better. From an outsiders perspective the only things going for our defense over theirs is Morgan Burnette and the Big 12 bias (based on truth, bloated on rednecks' comments).

That's fine for a #10-20 team, which is probably where they'll end up if they only lose to UF, LSU and GT. They're particularly lucky they're not playing Bama. But top 5 is a whole other story.

BTW, I think GT is in the same category, although there's more questions about our defensive talent. I would be quite skeptical of a publication that rated GT in the top 5, although I would love to see that actually happen.

...your close certainty of an UGA win there I find discouraging...

I realize that Okla St has a good offense but I also realize that they got blown out by UGA and by Troy in 2007, and as for 2008:

(1) they lost 4 of their last 6
(2) they only had one quality win (28-23 vs Mizzou)
(3) In their last three losses (3 of their last 4 games) their opponents scored an average of 53 points.

To put a positive spin on it, if UGA loses to Oklahoma State, it will be only the second time ever that a Mark Richt UGA team has lost in the regular season to a nonconference opponent (I bet you remember the other one), and it would definitely be an exciting trend for us dawg haters.

The odds are stacked against OSU, but they were for us last year too. Let's hope for the best.
