actually he does. Ponce de Leon did not sail from Spain to Florida. He sailed from the ports that Columbus set up in Hispanola/Puerto Rico to Florida and there is a Mayflower Day..

Interestingly, Columbus Day was not named after Christopher Columbus. It was named in honor of Columbus, Spain which was saved from the bubonic plague because all of the city’s post offices mysteriously closed for a day preventing the plague’s spread.
