Have We Ever Had a Five Star?

I'm sure somebody out there has been tracking Rivals.com and Scout.com for years - Have we ever signed a 5-star rated SA? (Calvin, Swillings, Brooking, etc.).

Brooking had two offers (GT and Furman I believe) and was on NO ONE'S list of recruits. I mean he would have been lucky to be a 1 star, but you can't measure heart, toughness, hard work and desire. Great Story!
I think Deshawn Simmons was a 5 star, and also Hobie Holliday. I know there are others as well. Was Derrick Stegall?
Our 5 star players don't seem to pan out.

Going back a bit (before the star system as we know it was implemented), I'd guess that Ken Swilling, Derrick Steagall and Donnie Davis were probably the highest rated players (mid-'80s to mid-'90s) to come to Tech. Each probably would have been a 5-star (or high 4-star) in the systems currently used by Scout and Rivals.

Anyone know when the services started assigning stars?

that is correct....and Jimmy Dixon was a 3-star.

CJ was a five star (the only one CG has signed, I believe)...

CJ may at one time been rated a 5* but last time I looked, Scout had him at 4.

charlie dudish thats a blast from the past

Wow...that IS a blast from the past. Avondale High School...I remember the TV special (was it CBS?) about his recruitment. He was at Tech when I was, but never lived up to the hype, unfortunately.

Someone always asks this question and I give the same answer. Calvin Johnson was a 5 star recruit. We had not signed one before him until we signed Quincy Carter who ended up going to play baseball and then coming back to play for UGA.

Prior to that they didn't have databases that kept star rankings. Had they, Donnie Davis more than likely would have been a 5 star recruit. Davis was the USA Today player of the year and featured ont he front page. He was considered no worse than the 3rd best QB in the country that year and many people had him #1.

....and Derrick Steagall was the #1 athlete in the country, choosing us over Alabama & Georgia.

I bet if Calvin committed to UGA, he would have been a five-star on rivals. Seriously.

Wasn't Jimmy Dixon the top rated RB out of Texas that year? How in the world can a guy led the state of Texas in rushing and walk out a 3 star?

I must be wrong about my stats. I'll be back with more ammo.

Here are Jimmy's accolades.

No way this guy is a 3 star. I remember thinking it was 4 or 5.

He was the #2 RB in the nation and #5 nationally by another source. Also the Texas offensive player of the year as a Senior.

By the way. I can't figure out how to get rid of all this bold print!

Sorry about that, but here goes:

HIGH SCHOOL: Honorable mention all-America by USA Today . . . The 5A Offensive Player of the Year in Texas by Fox Sports Net . . . Also named Offensive Player of the Year by the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, Arlington Star-Telegram and Dallas Morning News . . . First-team all-state by the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Texas Sports Writers Association . . . Among running backs he was rated No. 2 in the nation by Max Emfinger and No. 5 by RivalNet . . . Ranked the No. 16 prospect in Texas by Lone Star Recruiting's Hot 99 List . . . Listed among the South's Top 100 by Bill Buchalter of the Orlando Sentinel . . . PrepStar all-America . . . Led the state in rushing with 2,529 yards on 298 carries with 28 touchdowns . . . Averaged 8.4 yards per carry . . . Had two 300-yard games and five straight games with at least 200 yards rushing . . . Broke 17 city rushing records . . . Rushed for 937 yards as a junior . . . Coached by I.C. Little at Martin High.

Maybe this guy was a 3 star, but I don't see how. He was supposed to be all world when he got here. I've never heard of the #1 tailback in Texas, and the #2 to #5 tailback in the nation, depending on who ask, or the top offensive player in all of Texas 5A ball (regadless of position) being a 3 star nationally. I guess it's possible with form some source, though.

I thought he was a 5 star, but can't find proof for, or against, on Scout. They only list from 2002 forward. Don't they know we argue about this random stuff all the time?!

Rivals always seems to be tougher than Scout, for what it's worth.

Both sites base 4's and 5's off the Top "X" at each position. I am not sure what that "X" is...but Rivals has a shorter list for 4's and 5's.

I really just try not to get caught up in the rankings/ratings. There is so much detail out there now in terms of the kids character, grades, measurables, and video....you can tell a lot without hearing some opinion of a "fan turned internet writer".
