Have we really fallen so far?

arrrgh....didn't see the other thread....what the hell, I'll leave it.

Glad you left it. The title of the thread is a good one!

Good that is when every year about this time we get to see legends of college football coaching get lifetime achievement awards, and talk about Dodd being a great influence in their life.
I am not old enough to have personally witnessed Frank Broyles as a TECH assistant under Dodd, but my Daddy raised me well in this regard.

It seems like "The Old Guard" has simply forgotten the days they claim to harken back to.
Don't they remember that Bobby Dodd came from blood rival Tenn. as a very young assistant coach?

I guess they forget that a huge part of Dodd's greatness was his ability to hire other young assistants, and in doing so put together one of the best coaching staffs in the history of college football.

Frank Broyles, Ray Graves, Tonto Coleman, etc. all under the management and tutelage of Bobby Dodd. Not a bad formula for success.

I don't know what "The Old Guard" was like when Dodd came to work for Alexander, but I don't think today's regime understands our glory days as well as they think.

I wonder what kind of staff TB would bring. I am betting he has tons of connections at this point. May not be a bad hire.

Have we fallen so far?

You ask that question NOW?!?!?!?

What did you expect was going to happen?

You know what we're like? We're like that forty-year-old programmer who thinks his life sucks because his wife isn't as hot as the chicks on the computer ads that say "Hot singles in your area want to date you!" So he leaves his wife, buys a new suit and a used sports car and goes to meet some hot singles and "re-energize and excite his fanbase," if you know what I'm sayin.

Well guess what, big guy? Those hot singles aren't much interested in balding, overweight, forty-year-old programmers.

Yeah, his ex-wife, and ex-life, doesn't look so bad anymore, but it's a little late to be making that observation now.

Wake up! We are currently at the table begging with the likes of Navy, Duke and SMU!!!! For a guy that has coached at Ga Southern and Navy!!!! WTF!?

The ACC already has enough Bowdens, no need in making the league 25% Bowdens.

We would have to change our fight song to:

"If I had a daughter sir, I'd keep her away from Coach"

We are at the table begging? I thought we offered about $400K less than SMU (if rumors are true). Maybe that makes a difference.

TB has an undefeated season on his resume and that was coaching in the big, bad SEC. How many other candidates can say that?

If you check the archives, you'll find that I was one of the few who worried about being able to get an upgrade over Gailey.

Yeah, I know, GEETEELEE. That was more of a general "you," not directed at, well, you.

I don't know who I'm more frustrated with, our whiny fans or the gutless AD that let them push him around.

That is true...that also lets you know how bad he was off the field to not be able to keep a HC job.

Fair enough. We should also consider who he was dealing with there. They are even more difficult to please than we are.

Point is, if he wants to get back in coaching, someone will give him a shot. The Bowden name still means something in the southeast when it comes to college football. Not saying we should make him an offer. Just saying we may want to think twice before writing him off.

I'm rethinking Terry Bowden.

Perhaps we are both damaged goods in need of a second chance. If GT's past AD had not made so many humongous (sp?) mistakes we could afford to compete for some of the best prospects now we don't seem to capable of separating ourselves from Duke and SMU.

Giving GOL a second chance at UCF seems to have worked out very well for both parties.

If we don’t give DRad the tools he needs we will really be in a mess next year….

You have got to be kidding me.

Terry Bowden is a sleazeball. His one undefeated season came with Pat Dye's players, and was orchestrated mainly by his OC, Tommy Bowden, who promptly left for Tulane. After Tommy left, Terry was barely .500. At Auburn.

And if you want to talk humongous mistakes, how about an AD who fires a winning coach with a huge buyout, without having a replacement already locked up? What, was DRad blindsided by his own action? Did he not see this coming?

I think you are underestimating the situation. First, the fans part of the equation wasn't that they were whiny. It was that they were leaving. Our on-field product was not good, despite having the tools to compete. The fans that stayed were well beyond whiny. They had closed their checkbooks.

As far as the AD goes, I don't believe he's being pushed around. He's in a power struggle with the Old Guard over the direction of the program and it looks like he's giving them more than enough rope to hang themselves. DRad & Dr. Clough identified a certain type of coach they felt the program needed. It happens to be the type that not only would atually come here, but one we could afford. PJ is not that type, and look at the difficulties in getting him onboard. RN wasn't that type, but neither side wants him. Who brought Tater into the mix? I'll bet it wasn't the AD. Hell, I'd bet there was no way Edsall was on DRad's initial list until someone got his ear.

Let it play out and enjoy the ride.

So Clapper, if this PJ thing falls through do you think the Old Guard gets neutered?

so Clapper who is in the car after the "ride" is over?
I admitt it's been interesting at times...but at some point someone's got to give in & (committ to steering the program & driving the car)... become realistic about who the "real" options are & it needs to be done in a timely fashion...b/c the dead period is creeping up & we don't have a HC & we've got other schools calling on these recruits "hey who's GT HC again?"....plus all the assistant coaches don't know who's name is going to be on their paychecks...so to say "enjoy the ride" it's hard to do when the ride reminds me of I-20 at rush hour on a Friday when a major accident has just happened....it's CHOAS right now.

Not many people supported CG at the end of the season. He had plenty of time to get this program going where it needed to be going and bottom line is he didnt do it. IMO DRad had every right to fire him. Plus DRad had a guy lined up in WM, that many here supported but got shot down by the big money donors.

The Old Guard may not get chopped down immediately. Some will probably take their marbles and go home, which will open doors for some others. It will definitely be a chink in their armor. Hell, they may actually get their way at this point. But either way, everyone will know the lay of the land. Before now, it was sort of the unanswered question.

Everyone needs to get over this idea that losing some recruits this year is some sort of major deal. We're talking about bringing in a coach we expect to stay for decades and don't even know if ANY of these kids fit his system. Losing a few while setting us on the correct course is worth the risk.
