Head coach wish list - top 3 wants

I guess I see the X's and O's part of football a bit differently. In an ideal world, I'd love someone that is an expert coach on all levels- XOs, coaching, leadership, recruiting, etc. I'm not sure that exists anymore outside of a few rare people. Right now I'd settle for someone that may not be the XO or coaching expert, but can recruit and most importantly surround himself with the coordinators and coaches that are experts and can get the job done. In my mind, that's what Clemson has in Dabo. Would I love a Saban? Of course. Would I be happy with a Dabo? Absolutely.

Edit- If given the chance, I think Deion could be our Dabo. Deion may actually have better XO/coaching ability. Just give him the money to get the right coordinators.

Is this hypothetical coach going to pay for those expert coordinators and coaches themselves? Or is this good recruit going to work as head coach for a coordinator salary so we can afford those?

Charles Kelly is a dark horse candidate. We should at least interview him. Knows Tech and is an ace recruiter in the south.

You bring up a good point. I don't know what my top 3 wants are yet but my first one is:
1) Has never had a past association with Georgia Tech as a player or coach.

We've had 4 years of a staff built on that sort of thing. Either guys who played/coached here before or guys who played/coached with someone on staff before. Maybe it's not entirely fair or maybe there are some decent options excluded by that, but right now we at least need some confidence that whoever we hire, head coach or staff, was hired cause they will be good and not just cause they had connections.

1. The identity of their teams should be TOUGH and CLEAN. They should play hard every down. No penalties, everyone’s on the same page, good communication. Don’t need a lot of flash or glamor. Just hard nosed football.

2. A unique offensive/defensive philosophy. Sure some teams may “figure it out” just like some teams “figure out” any offense. When the option would grind to a halt, was it because the other team “figured it out” or was it because we were playing a good team? Would they not have “figured out” a more conventional offense?

3. Needs to assemble a strong staff with solid gameday decision making, good game prep, and can recruit and retain talent necessary to run the unique system(s) from step 2.

bonus: need a coach who loves and appreciates GT for what it is and embraces it

That was the best answer that I have seen, so far. Well put... I agree with these 100%

Wut? In what world are the coordinators paid for by the coaches? Our future as a football program hinges on getting the financial support across the board that Cabrera seems to be promising. If we don't get that support, we could hire Nick Saban and we'd continue to fail.

1. Strong worth ethic - instills the same in staff and players. We have to outwork others. Recruiting is harder for us - you must build relationships over time. You have to get out there and get a foothold in high schools. We have to work very hard in the offseason. Without the five and four stars all over the roster, the offseason is how you “add a star” to a player as they get smarter, bigger, faster, and stronger. (Ross and O’Leary)

2. Great balance between accepting responsibility for the whole program while trusting assistants and delegating responsibility to outstanding coordinators and position coaches. Truly understand the role of a head coach. (Ross, and to some extent, Gailey)

3. Like people. Enjoy relationships with players, staff, media, alums, and your higher ups - AD, President, Provost, etc. (Dodd, Cremins)

Evidently the rhetorical question missed the mark. No öööö the coaches aren't going to pay for it. You really think we'll be able to pay those kind of "Dabo model" coordinators with just a bit more financial support? I recall that there had been points where our entire defensive coaching staff combined made similar to what Venables was making at Clemson. You think what Cabrera is likely to bring is going to do something like double the kind of money we've paid for an overall coaching staff?

Do I honestly think we'll hit that financial mark? No. Did Cabrera suggest that's that support he's planning to give the athletic programs? Yes. If we aren't going to try to compete with finances and facilities, we should join the Ivey league and stop trying to compete in the P5. We'll find out in the next month or two.

I don't know about BOB. He really seemed a step down from Fridge when he took over here at OC.
