If you really do have 50 percent chance of converting a 4th-and-8, then that might be a good strategy. But against decent defenses, trying to convert 4th-and-8 on your own 5 is usually giving the other team automatic points.

Yes, but punting from your own 5 usually is, too. Especially in HS.
