Home Field Advantage

I agree with you almost completely. Except, that if the other person was a fan (and not an elderly fan), no one would have to encourage them to stand up and cheer.

I can't stand Tech "fans" who won't cheer or come to games, when they have no legitimate family, money, or distance excuses.

Let me make this clear: If you can cheer, and choose not to, you aren't a fan. I cheered loudly through the Gailey years. So did a lot of other people. Some of them cheered through the B*** L***** years. Really, if you are a fan, it is not difficult.

I too have cheered my ass off for Bill Lewis and Chan Gailey teams. I went to a game in Tallahassee one year where Charlie Ward and company gained what must have been 650 yards against us. It was at least 285 degrees in that stadium and I stayed until the final second. I have yelled "To Hell With Georgia" at the end of games where Georgia beat the everloving snot out of our team. Sometimes I don't feel like cheering. Does that mean I'm not a fan?

I guess you were the guy who was cheering when Reggie Ball threw the ball away on 4th and game against UGA in 2005. "Good game, Reggie! Atta boy! We all make mistakes! Good try! Get em next year!" is what you were cheering, I'm sure, since you are a true fan.

Since my days as a student, I've been generally frustrated (and often furious) with the lack of support that Tech fans generate. Looking at the powerhouse programs, their fans come to cheer, cheer loud, and cheer often.

You sound a lot like me a few years ago when I was an undergraduate. Your head is in the right place completely. One thing you always gotta remember though is the nature of our fanbase. More analytical people, like the kind that go to Tech, tend to be a little more socially reserved. We have our occasional night game that will rally us up (Miami 08), but we're not going to consistently jazz ourselves up like an SEC school when playing even an easy opponent. This reflects the academic nature of Georgia Tech in that you have to be very analytical to go there and that more analytical thinkers are typically quieter and veer toward introversion. Bottom line, more analytical people tend not to be as socially expressive. Find online somewhere the DiSC personality test and you'll see what I mean.

This is not to say there aren't some rowdy fans at Tech, they're just in the minority. I'm relatively shy but always found a comfort zone at football games in which I go crazy, especially when I'd be with my fraternity. However, stick me up in the upper deck with the calmer alumni, I'd feel funny to stick out like a sore thumb on every single first down we would gain.

If you aren't as analytical, then you probably wouldn't go to Tech and it's more likely you would fit in better at a different school which will likely have a rowdier cheering section (given that the sports program is steeped in tradition and an integral part of campus life).

I'm really not trying to offend anyone here who doesn't go to Tech, so don't read into it too much.

We are lucky if our fans stand and cheer on 3rd down. I'm assuming their logic is as follows: "if I cheer on 3rd down, perhaps it will disrupt what the other team is doing, fire our guys up, etc. with the ultimate goal of forcing the other team to punt." If this is indeed the logic used, why not scream your head off every down when our guys are on defense.
If we expect our team to bring it on every play....shouldn't we as fans do the same? There is nothing more disheartening than seeing one of our guys (MJ, Adamm Oliver, etc.) over the years trying to get the crowd fired up to no avail.

I've actually been told on many occasions over the years to sit down and be quiet BY TECH FANS, when all I am doing is standing and supporting our defense. I told some guy last year that if he felt that way he should have gone to KC with Gailey, that times are changing under CPJ. Apathethic and unsupportive fans have no place in consistently successful programs, and those of us programs trying to get there.

MY CHALLENGE TO YOU for 2009:
1. When our team is on defense, stand and scream every down. Good will happen.
2. Spread the word. Let's get screaming TECH fans in the seats of BDS to give us a true home field advantage.
3. ZERO TOLERANCE - do not tolerate anything less from the fans around you at BDS than you expect from our team. 100% all the time!

GIVE 'EM HELL TECH.

I'm with ya brother. If you don't like me standing up and rooting, well then keep your ass at home and watch it on espn360. Cause I'm not sitting, I'm not keepin' quiet. I pay as much as you do (obviously if our season tix are in the same place)

It doesn't matter who's the coach. Get off your ass and support the team (unless you physically can't get off your ass)

ONE MORE THING: ANYONE WHO BOO's 18-23 yr old kids/players..... NEEDS TO BE THROWN OUT OF THE STADIUM.

THESE KIDS AREN'T THE FALCONS, AND FURTHERMORE IF YOU'RE A FAN OF THE TEAM AND PROGRAM YOU SHOULDN'T BOO THE TEAM REGARDLESS............Now, booin' at the officials....have at it my friend

Bottom line is Jeff Schultz advocates starting fires as a motivational tool

"For the record, he said he does not plan to start any bonfires for a pep rally. That would be your job."

Well, I yelled for our team and was yelling to Hell With Georgia. So yes. Was I disappointed? Yes. Did I stop cheering? No. Did I have warm feelings about the way Reggie was thrown under the bus? No.

I stand by my statement. If you consistently refuse to cheer and are physically capable of cheering, or if you can drive to games and are unconstrained by your family obligations or job but don't attend any games, then you are really just a bandwagon fan.

It is apparent from your statements that you are a fan.

More Tech alums need to support the program by coming to games. More folks in the west stands need to support their team. There are too many yetmans.

Prior to the upgraded stadium, we had one of the best home field advantages WITH LESS PEOPLE. This is not just an issue of selling tickets.

When we opend the club section we effectively took all home field intimidation away. Now we look like a wine and cheese party.

As a minimum we should fill the bottom six rows of the club section with young alumni (or the old crowd).

Gotta get in shape to do that. Better start my endurance training today!

12-ounce curls is just what you need to get in shape. Here's what you do:

1. Do six 12-ounce curls per day, and twelve 12-ounce curls on Saturday.
2. Take Sunday off to rest your liver....EERRRRR...muscles.
3. If you feel like you can handle it, add more weight...perhaps 16-ounce or 20-ounce curls.

You should be ready to go by Septeber 5th! Cheering loud will not be a problem if you follow these three easy steps.

I am glad to discover I am not the only one who uses this term. If you're in college, 40 oz curls are acceptable as well.

We obviously have plenty of common ground. I'm just uneasy about the idea of one fan (or group of fans) making judgments about whether some other fan is cheering loud enough or often enough.

IMO, loud enough is the point where you don't have a voice the next day and often enough is every play on defense and applicable times on offense. But that's just me.

For those of you who were at the last baseball game against Southern Miss (despite the loss): the intensity the students had from the 4th inning on is what I expect from every student and hope to see from the other fans as well.

I agree. But I think group judgments are fair. And Tech fans, as a whole, do not carry their weight. Some sections of the stadium are better than others those, though their are individual exceptions in each.

At a game 2 years ago, the guy behind me accused me of being on ritalin and wanted to fight me because I was cheering too loud. It is normal for people to ask me to sit down at games instead of standing up and cheering.

True story. I hadnt been to a game in 8 years, since moving to NYC, and was able to catch the BC/GT game 2 seasons ago when Matt Ryan came to town. I had security called on me BY OUR OWN FANS for booing Matt Ryan during the game. It was a bitter reminder that our fans can truly suck balls.

W. T. F. ... ?

The only time I've seen security/police care is when fans threw crap on the field. The worst I've seen was after a field goal, someone in the stands got the football and threw it and hit one of the visiting team's cheerleaders in the head.

Other then that, I've heard every possible expletive word yelled at the top of people's lungs (mostly at the refs) without having security called on.

I don't think any of us disagree with what CPJ is wanting. Sadly though, I'm just not sure if our fanbase can give it to him. Hopefully our fanbase will prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

All we can do is keeping giving our 150% at every game and encourage the ones around you to join in. Hopefully us being more successful will pull the stick out of their arses.
