My $.02 on the "Gailey question."
Like others, I really, really thought his previous coaching credentials indicated that he could come in and adapt to the talent at hand, regardless of what he is working w/. What I heavily discounted was his learning curve on the difference between coaching paid professionals and 18-22 yr. old kids. 18-22 yr. old kids have to be carefully discplined, instructed and prodded to bring out the best in them; pro's have to do this w/o the above or they are released the next week.
I am willing to suffer through the rest of this year w/a few caveats:
1. Bilbo seeing a SIGNIFICANT increase in playing time. It is clear that he can provide a spark out there. It is also clear that he will make mistakes. Let him learn on the job and provide some offseason hope of the offense getting better.
2. Offensive coaching. Gailey has been quoted as saying that he did not appreciate always having a coach looking over his shoulder when he was the OC, but I think that he is too hands-off. O'brien remains very inconsistent--the irony is that if we stuck w/his run, run, run philosophy from last year we would be much more productive on offense by taking pressure off of Suggs/Bilbo and letting our defense catch a "breather" as opposed to spending too much time on the field. I am concerned about developing the QB's--Suggs has been here 2 yrs. and Bilbo 15 months and the rhetoric from the staff is that Bilbo only knows a very limited number of plays???
2. Gailey needs to take over the QB coaching duties as well as think about bringing in his own guy for the OC. O'brien was all but forced on him. O'brien might turn out to be a good coach, but there seems to be a breakdown between him and Gailey right now. The offense has no identity and we seem to come out each week w/a different philosophy as opposed to building on some things that are working.
The biggest disappointment that I would have the rest of the year is if the team completely quits and mails it in. I dunno know what the answer is to keep this from happening--I hope Gailey knows since he is getting paid close to $1 mil. per season.
