Honest Question About Gailey

My $.02 on the "Gailey question."

Like others, I really, really thought his previous coaching credentials indicated that he could come in and adapt to the talent at hand, regardless of what he is working w/. What I heavily discounted was his learning curve on the difference between coaching paid professionals and 18-22 yr. old kids. 18-22 yr. old kids have to be carefully discplined, instructed and prodded to bring out the best in them; pro's have to do this w/o the above or they are released the next week.

I am willing to suffer through the rest of this year w/a few caveats:

1. Bilbo seeing a SIGNIFICANT increase in playing time. It is clear that he can provide a spark out there. It is also clear that he will make mistakes. Let him learn on the job and provide some offseason hope of the offense getting better.

2. Offensive coaching. Gailey has been quoted as saying that he did not appreciate always having a coach looking over his shoulder when he was the OC, but I think that he is too hands-off. O'brien remains very inconsistent--the irony is that if we stuck w/his run, run, run philosophy from last year we would be much more productive on offense by taking pressure off of Suggs/Bilbo and letting our defense catch a "breather" as opposed to spending too much time on the field. I am concerned about developing the QB's--Suggs has been here 2 yrs. and Bilbo 15 months and the rhetoric from the staff is that Bilbo only knows a very limited number of plays???

2. Gailey needs to take over the QB coaching duties as well as think about bringing in his own guy for the OC. O'brien was all but forced on him. O'brien might turn out to be a good coach, but there seems to be a breakdown between him and Gailey right now. The offense has no identity and we seem to come out each week w/a different philosophy as opposed to building on some things that are working.

The biggest disappointment that I would have the rest of the year is if the team completely quits and mails it in. I dunno know what the answer is to keep this from happening--I hope Gailey knows since he is getting paid close to $1 mil. per season.

I think it needs to be determined exactly what the arrangement with Bill O'Brien is?

It is my impression that at least until now Gailey was completely "hands off" with O'Brien. Was that a condition - either formal or informal -of the job offer to Gailey or a suggestion or is my impression incorrect?

Suggs is a tremendous talent but doesn't have the proper position coach. Do you see how he winds up to throw to the right flat. But then he zings a clothesline 25 yards down the field. O'Brien has not kept him "in form". His technique and form like any skilled athlete - golfer, baseball pitcher, etc. - has to be constantly monitored. It's so easy to develop a bad habit. Friedgen's quaterbacks always demonstrate good form consistently because he constantly monitors and works on it.

Suggs has been winding up to the right flat all season. For some reason when he faces the right flat he goes into a slow motion wind up from the hip. I noticed it and I've yet to coach the first day of college football. Certainly our skilled coaches should have picked up on it.

It's clear it's just an aberration because the next play he's clotheslining the ball 25 yards with a quick release and snap of the ball from behind his head.

Gailey played quarterback and know how to throw a football - can't he keep him focused on good technique?

It would make sense to me to evaluate a possible offense without O'Brien or more Gailey involvement in the offense before dispositively making a conclusion of Gailey.

If he has a losing season this year? He would have to improve next year or be gone.

I say C. The two year plan. I want to see what kind of recruiting class this many-year NFL coach can pull in come Feb. If he can pull off what Al Groh has done at UVA then I'll stick with him and give him the benefit of the doubt for this year regarding injuries, etc.

But in addition, I think BOB needs to be fired this year. Gailey said he's going to focus on defense and special teams, and the O would belong to BOB. Well I believe now that BOB didn't learn very much from Fridge, we need a new OC.

Hey old foggy, it is good to see you back on the board.

Some random thought/questions that I cannot seem to answer:
1. Friedgen did not call his offense. The OC did, and it worked good for Maryland.
2. What is the big deal about a Friedgen offense that GT has supposedly inherited thru BO'B?
3. The defense was disgusted Thursday because the offense was not doing its part. "What is the use?" is being thought by a defense that has been performing quite well in all of the games, but the offense does not put points on the board.
4. There has to be a problem with our great offense. I say that because brilliant QB's (extremely brilliant when compared to those whose college texts are coloring books) cannot learn but a few plays in 2 years.
5. Why can't GT do some misdirection runs etc even better than WF?
6.
7. Why is our stadium so quiet?
8. Could we switch BO'B with someone else right now?
9. If the O-line is good, the WR's are good, the RB's are good, then what is left that is not working on the offense? The QB had no ints this last outing.
10. Is it an absolute rule that the good guys always finish last?
11. I think that a downs analysis should be made. What have we done on 1st downs? 2nd downs? etc? Also what kind of sequencing do we have? We run most of the way to inside the 5 then pass?
12. Why are we so predictable? There are times when "I" even know what play is coming and the opposing defense does too.
13. I saw some of the team members expressing their agony over our being whipped. Their passion is still there!
14. Our Yellow Jackets know that they are good and capable of great potential, but the score does not reflect it.

I'll stop here because I could go on all day.

Well, found this old thread started right after the Maryland loss. Even though we did go on to win 7 and a bowl, I am not sure going 1-3 in the last 4 (with a win over Duke being the only W) has left any of us feeling real good about things.

I think many of the thoughts and concerns raised in October are still with us. The loss to Uga was just pitiful.

I think alot has to change next year, and that is not so much wins and losses. We could go 7-5, but yet be very optimistic about the team if improved coaching, preparation is seen.

Most coaches usually put "their" stamp on a team. Not sure what Gailey's stamp is at this point.

You left one choice out, which is fire his ass now, go to Boise State or somewhere and get a real football coach and cut our losses. Not going to happen. This nightmare will actually get worse before it gets better. There are still alot of apologists who want to wish this thing away. Next year will get real nasty. Georgia may run 60 vs. 51, Vandy and BYU will get some revenge on the road, and Maryland and others will turn this thing uglier than you can imagine. He lost a year fooling around with the QB position on a team in his own words was "already winning, no need to rebuild" and now he's talking about possibly going with a true freshman. That ought to be a real experience for him, trying to play behind an offensive line coach who was a castoff from Duke and now has turned some fine prospects into a remake of Duke. You people had best wake up if you see this turning around.

One more year. He, RIGHT NOW, has to correct problems with the staff. Right now he has to get a new Strength Coach. RIGHT NOW!!! We do not have that tough of a schedule, sorry folks. The game that matters is ugag, that is what you build the program around and the acc takes care of itself. Let me put it this way, how long do they give us to contribute to A-T? Do they not want us to come up with more each year? Do they ask for it? This is the nature of college sports now, when you pay for the right to buy tickers you want something in return. At least we can expect discipline, effort, and smart play.
