I just read the article about Gibbs getting a preferred walk-on scholarship and that got me thinking. Does anyone know how the GTAA handles athletic scholarships for players that qualify for HOPE?

It makes good financial sense to have them use HOPE if they qualify considering they have the athletic scholarship as a backup. However maybe athlete's don't qualify? I couldn't find anything conclusive on the web about this.

They prefer you get HOPE, it gives you a better chance as a walk on. That's what Waggoner told my boys.

I was under the impression that if they qualify for Hope the the school gets that, then GTAA covers the balance. If not on or lose HOPE, then GTAA pays all of the tuition, fees, books, etc.

HOPE goes directly to the student account, then yes. GTAA would cover balance if an athletic scholarship has been earned/granted.

I think they are two separate entities. HOPE only comes into play on partials for other sports. Per the NCAA. If not, then we would have an unfair advantage in recruiting because all the athletes from GA would qualify. Per HOPE rules, all money's precede HOPE monies.

You also have to consider that in state tuition is considerably less than out of state. This would seem to be a good reason why we have more in state recruits. HOPE serves a similar purpose for walk ons

That and ain't no one ousside of China heard bout Georgia Tech University

Depending on the school, tuition is about a fourth of the total education costs when you factor in room, board, and fees. Athletic scholarships also provide tutoring and books, so Hope is only worth a fraction of the cost of a full athletic scholarship.

Yep

If you have a full scholarship you do not get to keep any hope money. PWO's if they can maintain a 3.0 they have hope. Its worth about 7K a year. The ( local) total cost to attend GT is over 29K a year. I wrote checks for two years with a PWO who had hope...

Good grief that is way more expensive than when I was there 2005-2009. I had hope which covered about 12k per year and ~4-5k of additional expenses each semester (about half of that for summer semesters) which I was able to cover with money from co-op and high school jobs.

Hope is not what it used to be... It only took state reps a few years to screw it up. Gotta pay for free baby sitting first.

That's so sad. I'm proud that my state was able to do this for me. I often brag about how great Hope is and ponder why other states don't follow suit.

I assume you are talking about the Georgia pre-k program. If your district's pre-k is glorified baby sitting they aren't doing it right. Personally I think the Hope scholarship should vary the award amount on a sliding scale with all qualifying students receiving something (maybe 1-2k minimum).

Does a PWO get access to the meal facilities that other athletes have access to? If they have access do they still have to pay for a meal plan? Just curious.

Technically speaking, all students have access with their dining plan. Most just don't know it.

Yeah, im gonna call BS on that
I worked at the AA while in grad school and did use their meals facilities, but if regular students had just come walking in im pretty sure they would be asked to leave

Edit:
Eating together, socializing with your friends, meeting for an evening snack...all of this comes with your Freshman Meal Plan. Meal plans at Georgia Tech allow you access to Brittain, West Village, and North Avenue Community Restaurants on East and West campuses. These restaurants offer varied menus including made-to-order salads, sandwiches, homemade pasta, omelets, and more.

You will also find the best pizza in town, vegetarian choices, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, ice cream, and more. Additionally, students can use their meal plan at Buzz-Buy to catch a quick lunch to go and at dinner in the Student Center Food Court.

No mention of edge center
