I’m a Duke grad school alum, mostly cheer against their sports though btw. Anyway, in the early 90s Duke had a committee to study going Div III for football, sort of a Georgetown model. The decision was obviously to stay Div I and the reasoning was that they had taken too much alum money to bail out. Duke alum look to Stanford as the example of how they should be more competitive in football.
Duke’s endowment is around $9B but sports money probably hinges on basketball. There is a chance they could make a push in football, probably have the money, but the Duke football brand totally sucks. Only two very brief winning periods in the past 60 years. Worse than Wake IMO. Why would a talented player go there? Is a Duke degree worth that much more to most 3 stars than a degree from wherever? If the degree means that much, and you have a 1250ish SAT/3.5+, why not just go Ivy league?
GT football brand far better to say the least. But I’ve always wondered how GT keeps up with so many GT students caring less and less about football. Where will the money come from?
Btw Duke is a thorn in our engineering school side…have been successful recruiting away some of our top young faculty with more money.
