I think part of the issue is the intellect of the GT Fanbase. As an alumnus and having many alumni friends, most of them are very capable of giving more, but they want to see the 'returns'. Compared to other programs, we don't have die hard fans that throw good money over bad blindly to support their team. The smallness of our school and lack of casual fans also hurts in this regard. I'd like to think of our alumni/fans as educated consumers, which is good in general, but bad for athletic fundraising.
The poor decisions by GT Athletic Directors over the years have not helped either. Bad contracts, crappy field turf in lieu of grass, better but still Busch league apparel in the bookstore are just a few items.
It is amazing how when our teams (football or basketball) are good, the alumni have no issue dropping coin on road trips, bowl games or Final Fours. I think we really need an Athletic Director that is a little more in tune with the GT Alums/fans and who will make an investment into a better program. The Tech fanbase and alumni have money, that is not the issue, but they are wise on how to spend that money and the unsafe bet right now is Tech Athletics.
