How is UGA still in the top 25

How did they remain in the top 25 after losing at home to South Carolina who wasn't ranked? Is it simply due to the fact that they're UGA and had the preseason ranking leading into this season. I mean they weren't all that impressive in person at the SC game & they weren't all that against Western Carolina....not a good thing to read early in the morning after a good breakfast.....
Any ideas....
OH and we lose to a ranked team and fall out of the top 25 all together....go figure?:twocents:
 
UGA has been one of those teams that always seems to hover around the radar of the Top 25 poll --the only real exception being a couple of the latter years of Dooley's regime and most of Ray Goff's tenure.

For the last 10 years, with exception to last years coaches poll, UGA has finished somewhere in the top 25 --five of those years in the top 10. I don't care for UGA any more than you do, but it's that kind of consistency that gives a team the benefit of the doubt with the pollsters.

By contrast --from 1997-2001-- GT spent five consecutive years in the AP top 25, but under Gailey's regime was not/has not been able to sustain any consistency of finishing up a season ranked in the final polls.
 
To me a more visible "Why is this team ranked" would have to be Virginia Tech.

This weeks ranked ACC teams are:

#14) BC (3-0)
#15) Clemson (3-0)
#17) VT (2-1)

Ok, UGA did lose to now #12 SC --VT was a pre-season #9, barely got by East Carolina --served as blocking & tacking dummies against LSU by getting beaten by six TD's & a FG, and had a 7 point lead on Ohio until midway through the fourth quarter.

There are a few 'others receiving votes' teams that should be ranked ahead of VT at this point --namely Texas Tech or Arizona State, or even Arkansas or GT. It's bad enough they are ranked --but being in the top 20 is even more befuddling. But, as with the UGA example, VT has finshed in the final polls (almost always in the top 20) 12 of the last 14 years.

With regards to UGA (and other SEC) rankings in the Coaches' Poll consider that:

There are six ACC Head Coaches with voting rights. Chan is not one of them.

There are seven SEC Head Coaches with voting rights. Richt is one of them.

(By my very unofficial sleuthfulness...)

There are four Head Coaches with voting rights that have previous ties to both leagues (votes could go either way) - Brown, Schnellenberger, Stockstill, and Zook.

There eight Head Coaches with ties (former HC, former Asst., former player) only to the ACC - Schiano, Lubick, Edsall, Cristobal, O'Leary, Montgomery, Rodriguez, and Willingham.

There are ten Head Coaches with ties only to the SEC - Stoops, Franchione, Dantonio, Blakeney, Mumme, Bower, Riley, Callaway, Leach, and Weis.

Voting on party lines would give the team in question a 17 - 14 advantage (plus 4 swing votes that likely throw enough votes to elevate both teams into near consideration).
 
Who cares? We lost last weekend they didn't. All that matters is beating them in November.
 
Haven't seen the AP yet but in the coaches, #11 UCLA fell out after losing to Utah. That's quite a drop.
 
UGA's win vs. Oklahoma State means nothing now, because Troy lit them up. Although Troy played Florida much better than Tennessee did and will give the mutts a ballgame on Nov. 3.

Our win vs. Notre Dame means nothing now as well. So we won't know about either team really for a few more weeks. Let's talk about the Jackets deserving a certain ranking after the Clemson game.
 
Does Clemson deserve their ranking though? I said it about BC and was dead wrong, but so far they haven't impressed me.

Well, 44-6 to an 0-2 Utah team was quite a loss --very deserving of such a fall from grace IMO.

Part of the reason they are ranked is because they are playing Alabama on ESPN this weekend. TV prefers both teams be ranked. If we win this weekend we'll be ranked for the televised Clemson game. That's how the ranking system works.

No, that's not how the ranking system works --particularly from the coaches poll standpoint --they could care less about who's on TV. For that matter I doubt that sportswriters are checking their local TV listings and deciding that team A will rank higher in their poll this week because they're on ESPN this weekend --and while I'm at it I'll bump team A's opponent up a few notches as well.
 
UGAg's "big win" over Oklahoma State was totally defrauded by Troy. It doesn't really matter either way - if they beat 'Bama then they deserve to be ranked and if the lose they will drop out.
 
When you get down to it --it really takes getting through September --letting the Div I-AA (I'm not callin' 'em by that Football Championship whatever-the-hell they're known as now name) cupcake games run their course (unless you play in Ann Arbor) and see what happens in head-to-head conference play.

As we know --the good, the bad & the ugly will separate themselves by the middle of October.

To be fair, Utah BUTCHERED THEM, ROASTED THEM ON A SPIT, ATE THEM AND SHAT OUT THE REMAINS by halftime.

You caught me, I was blaspheming. Still, if you pay attention to which teams become ranked right before they play on TV, you'll find it interesting.

they put good games on TV, common sense. If Bama had lost against Ark, this game would not be primetime on ESPN or even perhaps CBS. Producers chose highly ranked attractive teams to put on TV, why is that so difficult to understand for you? The TV schedules are announced after the rankings are released to choose the best games based on what happens every weekend.
