I have a bad feeling about CG. He seems like an incredibly nice guy but

I haven't seen a whole lot of positives thus far. His recruiting ability and especially his attitude toward recruiting are a HUGE concern to me. I also question is competetiveness. O'Leary was an honery SOB but he was ultra competetive, and worked as hard as anyone. I haven't seen any of that in CG. I sometimes feel like CG thinks he has escaped the rigours of the NFL for a more relaxed job in college.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I sympathize. I'm not pulling the plug on him yet, though. I expect a successful season but there is a possibility that it could be less than glamorous. Gailey may have thought it'd be easier than the rigors of the NFL but s-u-r-e-l-y he didn't think there wouldn't be any pressure! I'll pull for him until he falls flat on his face and then I'll help organize the detail and see he gets a decent burial. I still remember poor Bobby Ross's 1st couple of years. He seemed to be pretty miserable about it.

You've said it all! I have been thinking that for awhile but was a bit skiddish to say it, so thank you, thank you. I don't know why, but he seems so passive, laid back. I want to see some fire! I want to see some hunger to win - don't see it. When he stopped scoring at UConn, I smelled something fishy then. When he said what he did about recruiting, I thought something wrong there. When we have so many personal fouls, I wonder about him. It will be interesting to see how he does next wk. After all, this was our lst game, really, and they say teams improve the most between lst and 2nd game. We shall see.

bizzybee is right about Ross. I interviewed Ross for a local sports newsletter in his second losing season. I asked him if Tech was his final coaching spot, had he found a job he could retire at. He said, without question, that Tech was a perfect fit for him, and he would stay at Tech as long as Tech would have him.
.
Coaches are all human.

BOO

Gailey says he'd "rather have a positive effect on someone's life than a good win-loss record"...he's not getting either done ..don't think he's gonna make it as our FB coach!

For gosh sakes, give the man a CHANCE. You guys sound like you want to STONE the man to death just because you THINK he's done something wrong. Have any of you BEEN to practice?? Have any of you SPENT an entire day with the man?? This is our THIRD game under our NEW coach. He's STILL getting his feet wet for goodness sake. Yesterday was a BAD game all around. Look at all the talent UGA has. They have probably MORE talent all around than we do and they SQUEAKED out wins at Clemson and USC and could NOT score an offensive TD on USC.

Give the man a chance. Give him AT LEAST the rest of season, if not next. It's been YEARS since he's coached college ball, but he's got a VERY successful track record with some hall of famers like Emmitt Smith, Jerome Bettis, etc. He WILL get the job done.

Our entire team...players AND coaches need our support and confidence right now. Now is NOT the time to give up the ship. Have a LITTLE faith!

Guys no offense but the offensive game plan was O'Brien's. We were down 24-6 before he decidedto let Hollings play some ball. Suggs has a terrible throwing motion and seems to short arm quite a few passes. Blocking was suspect. Our defensive line has no push and we committed way to many stupid mistakes to win that game. Funny we almost won depsite ourselves. Bowden can keep being smug but he won't be coaching at Clemson much longer... they sure are gonna take some lumps later in the season.

This is NUTS

Can't recruit at all, is too nice to coach, takes too much control of the offense, no wait he doesn't take enough control of the offense, isn't competitive enough, and my all time favorite - he only came to the college game to get away from the rigors of the NFL - where I am sure he was a total flop I mean he never was a head coach or associated with a winning team.

And all that insight, conclusion and analysis of the situation is complete and airtight after a lengthy 3 week analysis.

Yea we lost and I wasn't totally happy with the way we did it - but to say we have HUGE concerns now is ludicrous. The question will be to see how things improve (or don't improve) over the season and watch our talent and coaching over some period of time. Then come talk to me about HUGE concerns and time to get rid of the coach and all that whatnot.

I agree that the death knell has rung WAY too early for CG. The one thing that does concern me, though, and it may be something he'll have to learn as a college coach, is the length of leash he has on the players. It's been written that CG has given the players a wider berth in terms of behavior, and treats them more like "men." While this is good, in theory, the reality is that many college players aren't necessarily men yet, and still have some growing up to do. The O'Leary bark and bite may have had a beneficial effect on some players' attitute and play. CG might find out that he has to take a harder line on the college player as opposed to a pro to get them to maximize their ability.

You don't pay a man a million dollars plus to be an apprentice. This on the job training at this level can't and won't be tolerated by theTech people. It was not the loss that depressed me, it was the way we lost. We haven't had such an abysmal exhibition of how not to play the game since the glory days of BILL LEWIS. There was no discipline-the players were out of control-the special teams were notso special, in fact they were abysmal-I've been a Tech man for 56 years
and I have never seen any Tech coach do so little with so much. Hell, i'm mad as hell. We have a right when we make a fancy donation just for the privilege of buying season ticket to see our team properly prepared to play football. I have never seen at any level of football a player that couldn't keep up with the goal line and stand there and watch the ball roll into the endzone.
Hargrove was a loose cannon-he was flaged for 35 yards of penalties of our 101 yards total for the team. Tony is a fine young man but it was obvious that Chan couldn't control him yesterday. This team was not prepared to play football and I'm not sure that we have someone that can or will correct what I saw yesterday. Another thing to think about-Chan is obviously playing favorites
and this will cost us dearly. I love little Rhino
but he had no business being on the field on defense yesterday. He cost us 14 point when he fell down and allowed a long gain and on another occasion they scored a TD.At 5-6 he simply can't defend those tall receivers of clemson.Everybody knew that but Chan. And if he doesn't give Bilbo a real chance he will transfer. Ypu'll see.

This seemed like a decent thread, but...............

For all of you calling for CG's head already, do us all a favor and crack open a 6-12 pack, pass out for a loooooong nap, wake up tomorrow morning, take 2 aspirin and lets get focused on BYU.

It's his 3rd game with us. It's Sugg's 3rd game and it was on the road against a pretty damn good defense. It was a piss-poor conditions and it started out as a 2 point underdog so the "experts" in Vegas who aren't blind "loyalists" obviously have seen something you haven't.

I suggest we start discussing who is going to cover that "2nd coming of Jeremy Shockey" in BYU's Tight End and weather Rhino or Houston gives us the best chance defensively vs that 4 and 5 WR package they have.

I said it last week, I'm sticking with the prediction:

Tech vs Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl

I like your post, 2BigTechs.
The coaches and players made some mistakes yesterday-it's a game, not a controlled experiment-let's play next week.

Big Buck, we must be about the same age, because that is about how long I have been a Tech football fan.

Since Gailey is the head coach, it is his responsibility to make sure the assistanct coaches perform their jobs. He is very much like a CEO.

As stated before in an earlier post, he has the most credentials going into the season than any previous coaches, other than Heisman and Alexader. I do not know their (Heisman & Alexander) credentials prior to coaching at Tech.

Gailey has the responsibility to make changes when the assistants are not doing their jobs. He has stated he will let the OC and DC call their respective plays, and, I assume, make their own substitutions.

I have seen enough of BOB from the Peach Bowl, through last year, and through this past Saturday. His offense is totally unimaginative. If I were Gailey, I would either take over the offense or place Nix in charge. O'Brien played defense in college and has not played offense. Nix has both played the quarterback position and coached offenses at other schools. He has done very well on the offensive side of the ball.

Tenuta has done well at all of the other schools where he has coached, so I would give him a little more time with our players, however, I would put him under the gun. He has a ton of experience and talent on that side of the ball. His defensive plan was poor for the Clemson game. As stated in another post, I give him a "D".

Also, the special teams were pathetic. That assistant coach gets an "F-".

I am not ready to panic and pull the plug on Gailey, because he has the credentials of a good CEO of football coaching, but he definitely needs to get involved with the offense and exert greater pressure on the other coaches.

We have more pure athletes than Clemson. We have had better recruiting seasons than Clemson for quite a few years now, other than last year. Recruiting "can not" be used as an excuse for our loss to Clemson, since we have the better players at present.

It was pure and simple, we were outcoached in this game the same as last year.

yellowjacket, that quote does sound like a coach with no hunger to win or fire, but after thinking about it, perhaps he is being rather subtle about those programs who ignore values of education, lifestyle, etc. We know quite a few of those, don't we! He still might have a lot to learn about recruiting wars, pressures to win, etc., but I have to believe he was referring to not neglecting the most impt things for kids. Hopefully.

Ahso I have been a die hard rambling wreck since
1946 and I have seen some great times and some not so great times and so have you. When you have children in their 40's and 50's it won't help to fib about your age. But I like you haven't lost my zeal for Jacket football. I like and appreciate your posts Ahso.

I hope Gailey is a "second coming of Dodd" but Saturday's fiasco and the lack of much public success on the recruiting trail don't give me much confidence. Add to that the lower discipline than in O'Leary's reign (ear-rings, etc) I worry even more that he won't cut it. I will give him credit for being a more astute judge of player talent than O"leary....Hollings would still be on the bench if G.Ol were still here. I also feel that he may have had to settle for less quality than he desired in assembling a staff..if so he better start prparations to get rid of some of them while we sit at home during bowl season!

Just a note guys, wearing ear rings, etc. don't have anything to do with discipline. That's just lifestyle. By letting the players have a little more freedom CG is treating them like young men not children. And you tell you the truth, the last Tech team I can remember who played a game like Saturday's was....LAST YEAR. Don't you remember some of the crap we watched from last year's squad? It's not like we're the reigning conference champs or major bowl victors here!!!

We should have won yesterday IMO. We played sloppy, our lines both got their butts kicked, our receivers looked flat and our new QB didn't get the job done. But we still had a shot, in Death Valley, to pull it out at the end. I believe we will get better starting this week. Anyone remember BC? How about NCSU in '99? Why don't we wait a little bit before we start jumping off ledges (or pushing coaches over).

I agree that is it way too early to give up on this team or CG. I think he has a steeper learning curve than I originally thought. I also have disagreed with virtually everything the man has said and most of the things he has done regarding recruiting. I fully stand by my concern there.
