If Chan wins 3 games this year, HE WILL be given 1 more year. The GTAA is of the opinion that ANY coach deserves 4, but I don't think they could hold back irate alumni into a 4th year. I would think 3 years is fair to see significant improvement. Gailey took over a program not NEAR as talented as UGA, and on top of that Moore, Braine, and Clough handicapped Gailey with flunkgate.
The fact of the matter is we will lose most games this season because we only have 7 defensive lineman. 3 of them are freshman, 1 is a converted LB, and 1 has never done anything in his entire career at Tech to imply that he might have a shot at playing time. THIS IS NOT GOOD. This means we have two DLineman that have significant experience on the line (Parker and Henderson). People will eat our lunch.
Teams will beat us senseless because of this and no matter HOW good our LB's and Secondary are, it won't matter. It will be easy to run on us, and if a QB can read the blitz, he'll have a field day throwing to the open coverage. I don't care how good of a coach you are, we're going into a knife fight each week with a butter knife and one hand tied behind our back.
So get used to it. We'll probably win 4 games this year. We'll probably get blown out by Auburn, blown out by FSU, blown out by NCST, and blown out by UGA. What's sad is, even with the blow outs, it won't be a good measure of whether or not Gailey is a good coach. If he wins 6 or 7 games the guy should get Coach of the Year honors.
What really sucks is in this day and age, fans are spoiled. It's "Win Now" or "get out of Dodge". Tech is a different school than the Oklahoma's, Georgia's, and Florida's. By the way those schools are run (Huge Student Body State schools, broad curriculums, and lower academic standards on athletes) It is easy to go there and win in a short period of time. What is terrible, is we have a lot of Tech fans who look at these schools and think the same formula applies to us . It can't. We currently have the HIGHEST academic standards on football players of EVERY school in the ACC. EVEN HIGHER THAN DUKE!! This is called a competitive DISADVANTAGE. Thank you Dr. Clough!!! We have also balanced (sarcasm) this higher academic standard by broadening our curriculum. Our small curriculum is Another competitive DISADVANTAGE.
I think Gailey has a lot of kinks to work out, but I also think he's a good coach who can make us a consistent winner. Guys like Tommy Bowden, Bill Lewis, Bob Davie, etc. were in way over their heads. There's a trend those coaches have that Gailey does not. They all had little experience being a head coach and quite simply were or in Bowden's case still is, learning on the job. The problem is, if you don't have the experience to recognize what your problems are, then you really will never learn what you need to learn to win.
This is where Gailey is different. The guy has been a head coach at the college and Pro level. He's also run VERY SUCCESSFUL Offenses in Pittsburg, Denver, and Miami. At Dallas, Emmitt had some of his best productivity as a Running Back. He took that team to the playoffs and since then, they haven't been back. Even though he was disliked in Dallas, he had to deal with swarms of controversy from Michael Irvin and a team that had no discipline prior to him getting there. If you look at guys with similar backgrounds to Gailey on the college coaching level, three standout to me. Pete Carrol at USC, Groh at UVA, and Robinson at UNLV. I don't think anyone would doubt that Groh is making UVA a serious contender. Robinson has made UNLV a regular bowl team, and Carrol has brought USC back to prominence.
Gailey in Miami made a guy named Jay Fiedler good. In Pittsburg he made their Offense a high octane scoring machine. Our Coach has been there, and he's got the smarts to learn from his mistakes. I just hope that we give him enough time to prove he can do it. Firing Gailey this season could prove drastic as we will once again, start over from square one and most likely with a guy that does not have NEAR the experience as Gailey.
All I'm saying is Gailey's got the decked stacked against him, and most of it IS NOT his fault. He's had to deal with flunkgate and injuries galore since he's been our coach. On top of that, he's dealt with an incompetent AD in Dave Braine who's done little to help him out. He's also following one of our best 4 year performances in the last 40 years of our history. Yet has a team that is not indicative of coming off that successful of a period.
Now, I'm not syaing Gailey has no blame on his shoulders. The BYU game was a very conservative playcalling strategy that blew chunks.
I already made the comparison to the offense I saw at BYU to the old Redskins Coach, Joe Gibbs. Like we did Thursday at BYU, Joe Gibbs used to run a very unimaginative offense with 1 back 3 receiver sets. The difference is Gibbs offense executed flawlessly and made that offense work. We did not execute flawlessly (11 penalties, 4 turnovers). Two things that will NEVER win you games. We still had a chance to win the game too, that's what is really surprising.
There are a bunch of Tech fans here who are impatient and it's easy for them to take the attitude "our coach sucks, blah blah blah."
That's the Easy thing to do. That's the easy part. Those fans see things on the surface and that's it. I'm not saying those things are not valid, BUT THEY AREN'T VALID if you don't consider EVERYTHING ELSE TOO!! These fans often times provide no arguement as to why the coach sucks other than what they see with their EXTREMELY LIMITED football knowledge. They certainly have not shown the ability to put things in perspective.
Tech fans smell blood, and my only hope is that we can replace Braine (which would do us all wonders and ease a LOT of our pain), which might hold off the masses from axing Gailey long enough to let him show he can win.
I don't doubt that we have a coach who can make us a winner. How long is the question. I wouldn't wait 8 years, but are we willing to wait 4? Are we willing to wait 3? If we fire him after 2, would you think twice about it given the circumstances he's had to deal with OUTSIDE of coaching football on the field? I would. Especially when your alternative is get another coach that most likely won't have as much experience but will please the rowdy fans, and start back at square one.
Fire Gailey after 2 years because some fans with absolutely no knowledge (other than being a fan) of the game of football feel that he is not a good coach? I don't know about you, but I'd MUCH RATHER give Gailey 4 years on the flats to be sure than believe the whinings of some Tech fans who think he's a bad coach. Which do you think is more healthy for our program?
I'm looking forward to watching improvement out there on the field. Keeping an eye on recruiting, watching the players develop and the coaches develop. I think this staff can do good things. But right now, I just don't think it's possible, no matter how good they might be. We need to be a little patient.
