I think PJ should retire as OC

When our offense is rolling it is fun to watch, but when it doesn't work we need to have an answer. A great article in the Oct 5 Sports Illustrated talks about how Oklahoma, ND, UNC and TCU have tweeked or added twist to their offense or defense without disregarding their core beliefs. This is what GT has needed to do for the last few years. Defenses have figured out how to bull rush our offense after the Notre Dame game. We have to be able to go to a multiple wide receiver set in passing situations and we need to have some kind of "jumbo" package on short yardage or goal line situations. Bringing in our 180lb WR's as tight ends does not lead to many edges being blocked that well. Keep the option as our bread and butter 75% of the time, just have something else to put on the bread the other 25% of the time. It also gives our opponenets more to prepare for during game week. Hopefully we go 2-0 for the rest of the season.

Best post of the thread. Defend the coaches all you want but when you get shutdown like we were after the 1Q last night (offense) you need to TRY SOMETHING ELSE.

And guess what, you can't try something else unless you practice it during the week.

They nearly charmed me to death last night.

Well, I'd be lying if I said I shrugged my shoulders and moved on during the game.

But as I've moved farther away from my college days, I realize now how dumb we all really are at that age. So I figure there's no point in ripping out your chest hair over some dumbass kids playing a game. I try to enjoy the traditions and memories more than anything else now.

Of course, I have the Spurs to help me cope and keep me distracted over the next 7 or 8 months, so I might have a bit of a cheat card.

Yes, let's try new offensive schemes with a team full of true freshman - that should work

Again, trying something new with guys who seem to struggle with the fundamentals from our base set is probably not the best idea.

The primary problem on offense is the OLine. Until that is fixed, everything else is irrelevant. PJ tried to do what you described in 2013 with Vad, but our OLine blocking was so atrocious that he scrapped it and went back to the bare basics. I think it was a big mistake that he scrapped it altogether, but that's who PJ is, for better or worse. That's why I think bringing in a new viewpoint can help us here... it can maybe help us fix our OLine problems, and once that is taken care of, we can diversify a bit when needed.

It's not that you don't have a valid point, but you are hoping for something that just isn't going to happen with PJ in charge. You have to accept that PJ has a vision for what we are and what we are going to be, and he's not just going to change his offense, especially when we can't even run his offense properly. Best thing to hope for is that he diversifies the way our OLine plays.

It depends on the fundamentals that are being taught. That goes back to coaching. There is more than one way to block in pass protection or on running plays. The biggest ostacle to our offense is that it is one dimensional! Sometimes the new schemes work better.

This is real life football, you don't just select plays off of the game console and expect things to run smoothly.

We started two freshman tackles. How much of the expanded offense should they know?

We played most of the game with our 5th string bback. No knock on Allen, but that is where he was coming out of spring.

This is the key to knowing why our O looked so bad this year, youth. It isn't our S&C coach who is failing. There were times when we had 5 guys on O who have had less than a year in the program. We're playing guys who were marked for the scout team this year who have less than 6 months experience with the 3O.

I agree with you about the Oline but PJ is not going to entertain any new viewpoints. It's not what he does.

No no no, PJ absolutely tried this "entertain new viewpoints" crap with Vad and discovered that we became a team with more plays, but who couldn't run any of the extra plays well.

We switched back to the base stuff in 2014 and it worked.

This year we simply don't have players.

Get over it.

Someone sold their soul to the devil right before the end of the UGA game to ensure that win, and this year's season is payment for their unholy pact.

This is actually plausible.

We returned 4 out of 5 linemen, 3 of them seniors. We can't run up the middle consistently and that has very little to do with any of the skilled position players.

This. We can't run simple dives or the TO pitch without fumbling yet posters want us to line up in shotgun sets with 5 WR. Some of you just don't get it.

About the most you can ask out of PJ is for him to add certain wrinkles here and there to offset when teams are selling out. The screen out of the backfield last night is a good example of this, we ran it twice and saw huge gains. Honestly I was surprised we were able to complete these plays given how pathetic our personnel is.

We need to learn how to run the TO without fumbling much more than we need to learn a new offense.

When we are in an obvious passing situation, I want JT in shotgun to see the field better. I have seen too many times his motion puts his back to the line and he turns around to a defender in his face. We could have a wide open receiver and there is no way he could find him.

I also note that on top of the fumbles, we have gone three and out at critical times. Those hurt almost as much as it wears out the defense.

We had some truly atrocious play calling tonight (in addition to the 3 fumbles, bad penalties, and awful punting game). The one that really stuck out to me was a 2nd and 1 in the second quarter. We were up 14-0, with the ball. You either run it up the middle and secure the first down or take a shot deep with a go or post route. Instead, we run it right into the teeth of their defense with an A back sweep, lose 5 yards, and proceed to do absolutely nothing offensively the rest of the night. Just awful.

this is the one that comes to my mind. But then you are forgetting what we did on that 3rd and 6. Ran the dive...LOL

The playcalling was really really bad.

It amazes me how many of the TO's strongest defenders just do not understand this.

It's just amazing and it's also astounding how far into denial this fanbase has retreated. Maybe this season will shock a few more of us up. It's not injuries. It's something fundamental. I like Paul. But he's going to have to do something that I guess he's never had to do before and hire a real offensive line coach and/or a real offensive coordinator. If he doesn't his days on are the Flats are numbered.

As much of a fan that I am not of this base offense, I trust PJ, as much as anyone should be trusted, to run this stuff. If he's going to run it though, he's got to find personnel that can do it. But I'd rather look awful running other stuff than this stuff. When you couldn't probably beat Navy at this game, it looks 10 times worse.
