We need to blow their doors open with CBK emptying the bench in the second half. I can remember the days this happened with our program. It seems lately, last 10-15 years, we have laid eggs in these types of games. I want to believe Key will have this team ready to play, take care of business, and sit the starters for at least the fourth quarter.

10-15 years we haven’t routinely blown out cupcakes? Seems excessive. Maybe that holds for 1-5 years.

Yeah, for the most part CPJ and even Gailey took care of business against cupcakes, like 70-0 stuff. I’d say it’s definitely more of a recent phenomenon that we’ve struggled.

Gailey didn’t lay 70 on the cupcakes. Those games were usually 35-3 or 35-7. I think it was just his personality. Now if you couldn’t stop runs in the A gap, you got a beating like ‘Cuse.

Yeah, i was thinking about the 70-7 over Navy, but that was O’Leary’s last year.

We beat Samford 69-14 in 2007. Choice and Dwyer ran for a billion yards. We did only beat Samford 28-7 in 2004.

That said, The lastööööing idiot lost to 0-2 Citadel. Gailey looks a lot better these days

Gailey was a lot better than the Waffle House Kid. Not sure if it's been mentioned but losing to N. Illinois right off the bat when expectations were high that we were going to turn the corner was a complete effin disaster.

I remember when Louisville was a cupcake!
Louisville has been mostly pretty good to very good since 1990, thought they have had their bad years along the way.
  • They won 8+ games 17 times between 1990 and 2022.
  • They won 9+ games 12 times between 1990 and 2013.
  • They won 10+ games six times between 1990 and 2013.
  • They've won 12 games twice, 2006 and 2013.
They've also fallen below .500 nine times between 1991 and 2021, but never longer than two years IAR.

They were indeed a cupcake, with notable exceptions, up to and including the early Schnellenberger years in the mid-1980's.

Very well could be, I’m just remembering some games that were too close for comfort. MTSU, Wofford are the first two to come to mind.
Gardner-Webb in 2008. I can’t believe I sat in the car with my hands over my face listening on the radio as GW was lining up for a FG late,

Yeah, they couldn’t stop the dive.

Gailey was no Spurrier who would put in backups and run the same offense. That probably hurt us on developing depth.

While it was maddening to go 6-6, 7-5 with the occasional 8 win season with fans calling for his dismissal during the call-in shows, it’s amazing what a 6-6 season this year would feel like for the direction of this program moving forward.

There is a question of trajectory though. Going 6-6 after doing the same the previous four years is one thing; going 6-6 after four losing seasons is another.

I can't tell you how often the word 'mediocrity' was thrown around during the Gailey years. I think if he would have beaten UGAY at least 1-2 times, certainly he would be considered a very good coach historically. I would go to his radio/luncheon shows when Wes Durham would hold them during that time at the GT hotel off of Spring St. Coach Gailey was really a great guy, easy to talk to and always willing to answer our questions and speak candidly when we were off air. Still he could feel the frustration of the fan base at times, doing 'ok' during the regular season, going to mid tier bowl games (and usually losing them). He had some big wins against schools like Clemson, etc. with C Johnson but the monkey on his back was UGAY.

That game has to be the most brutal win I've experienced as a GT fan. The stadium was sort of dead due to it being a holiday weekend or fall break or something (plus the opponent), and we had Calvin Booker (3rd string, pro-style QB) starting due to injuries. I remember seeing some high school recruits in the stands and thinking that they definitely weren't going to be signing.

Second was probably the 2nd half implosion for the 2014 GA Southern game, but at least that involved some late game heroics. Still, both games ended with a sense of bitter relief.

That said, if you look at 1 win in particular it has derailed that program since that night. November 19, 2005. GT 14 #3 Miami 10. They had 1-2 good years since, but the demise of Miami in general started that night.

I agree overall. CCG would have some big wins (Auburn x2, Clemson, 9-0 #10 NCSU in 2002, etc) and then have the dud. 2006 season was it in a nutshell. 9-2 to 9-5. Losing to UGA on a blown call. Losing to Wake in the worst ACC CG I’ve ever seen. Lastly blowing a huge lead in the Gator Bowl. Writing was on the wall going into the 2007 season.

Funny you mention GSU in 2014. After the comeback my damn cable froze right when GSU was throwing the “hail mary” pass at the end of the game. Couldn’t get my phone to refresh fast enough. Haha Fun times!

It's a good point that we need to break out of the cupcake struggles, even if there's disagreement about how long we've had them.

Here are the Collins era indisputable cupcake games:
GT 35 - Western Carolina 17
GT 45 - Kennesaw State 17
Citadel 27 - GT 24

None of those scores are blowouts. The fewest points we gave up is 17 which is sad. In 2018 under Johnson we beat Alcorn State 41-0.
