I think SC State game tells us a lot…..

I remember in 2015 after dropping nearly 70 points on both Alcorn and Tulane to start the season, Herbstreit was really high on us. I think he even picked us to beat ND that morning on Gameday. Then we only won one more game after that.

This needs to be a 70-0 type game. I don't think Brent has that killer no effs coach in him.

I'll tell him both when I see him.
After all the nice things he said about Coach Pough in his press conference, I don't see it happening.

Games like these don’t do much for me and I usually don’t watch them for these reasons:
  1. If GT doesn’t win by 30+ I’ll be concerned.
  2. If GT wins by 7 or fewer I’ll be very concerned.
  3. If GT doesn’t win I’ll be pissed for a long time.
  4. If GT takes care of business and wins convincingly it’ll be expected, like the sun coming up every day.

I'm not paying attention to the score. Instead, I'm paying attention to a few specifics while I enjoy watching our boys win:
  • OL pass blocking. Is it good enough to allow for passing down field or will we have to continue to rely on bubble screens?
  • Tackling on defense in the 2nd half. We did great in the 1st half, but can we be consistent with our tackling in the second half or will we implode like we did against L'ville?
  • Field goal kicking. Can we rely on our kicker this season? If so, from where? I'm fine with going for it on 4th whenever we're inside of the opponent's 35 yard line. I'm not fine with blowing a 4th down on a kicker who can't hit the broad side of the barn. We don't need an amazing kicker like Butker (though I dream of that). We just need an average FG kicker.

Gardner-Webb in 2008. I can’t believe I sat in the car with my hands over my face listening on the radio as GW was lining up for a FG late,
Booker was nowhere near an option QB. It was just a situation of a guy trying to learn an offense during the game that he wasn't the physical type to run. Everything was off.

If SC State's band doesn't win halftime, I will be concerned.

This game could only tell us one thing: we really suck.

That will not happen so hope for a fun game for the home team and no injuries.

The next couple of games will tell us a lot.

That said, if you look at 1 win in particular it has derailed that program since that night. November 19, 2005. GT 14 #3 Miami 10. They had 1-2 good years since, but the demise of Miami in general started that night.

I agree overall. CCG would have some big wins (Auburn x2, Clemson, 9-0 #10 NCSU in 2002, etc) and then have the dud. 2006 season was it in a nutshell. 9-2 to 9-5. Losing to UGA on a blown call. Losing to Wake in the worst ACC CG I’ve ever seen. Lastly blowing a huge lead in the Gator Bowl. Writing was on the wall going into the 2007 season.

Man, that ACCCG with WF was like fingernails on a chalkboard. We should have wiped the floors with their rears. On paper we were supposed to but that game was so anemic and hard to watch. Calvin's grandparents were sitting in front of us for that game and you could just feel the frustration from the GT side. But hey, those were some great unis we had that day.

I was in school then and the game was right before fall break.

Story I heard was that the whole team started partying Thursday night and were hungover as hell which is why we looked so bad.

It was really Booker at QB. He was lost. It would be like taking Tom Brady and having him run option. Booker was a pocket passer transferred in from Auburn to Gailey's jackets. Didn't fit CPJ's team, but he was all we had that day.

Funny thing about the Carson Newman game is, I remember seeing the Dwyer play that saved the game for us from a different perspective than my actual seats. To this day, I remember the play like I was in the lower west, but I know I was in the upper north.

Don't remind me.
Calvin. Choice. And we mustered all of six points against Wake MOTHER BLEEPIN' Forest!
Wasn't enough alcohol in Glynn County that night to ease the pain.

MOSHO:

1. Pas blocking has to improve, I think it will once the starters learn how to work with each other under fire. Is that 2 games or 8 is the question?

2. 2nd half tackling was partly due to attrition; couple starters got hurt, the others got tired. What we’ve seen from GT defenses far too often; depth, or lack thereof.

3. Damnifiknow. Kickers can be real headcases.

We lost a bunch of close game that season. The ND game was not one of them. UNC, Pitt, UVA, VPI, and UGAg were all 1-score games. That year could have been an 8-4 year had things gone right for us. Minimally, it should have been 6-6 and a bowl game. The next season we came back and won 9.

Graduation and injuries were the story of that one. From 2014, on O alone, we had lost the following:

QB: Byerly
BB: Days, Laskey, and Connors
AB: Perkins, Hill, Bostic, Zenon, and Andrews, and Snoddy for 6-games
WR: Smelter, Waller, Dennis
OL: Mason

That's a whole lot of talent right there.

Actually it ended up a 1 score game. We managed to score late and get an onside kick. We then threw a screen to Skove or something and got another TD, but didn't get the second onside kick.

Yeah, but that was because they were playing the scout team in the 4th.

Just think - we didn't have Smelter, Zenon or Snoddy for the ACCCG or the Orange Bowl in 14, either.
We were decimated at A back with injuries too. we were reduced to playing walk-ons.
We got hurt at B back when Custis and Leggett left. If Marshall had been better at ball security, PJ probably would have played him more, because Skov just wasn't a home run threat. But Marshall was. Would have really opened up that offense and could have made the difference in a few games.

SC State scored 7 against Jackson St and 3 against Charlotte. If our defense gives up more than 10 points before our walk ons are in the game, I will be disappointed. For offense I'm not as concerned with the overall score. I want to see us be dominant on the line and get plenty of reps for the young players.
