Let me go ahead get this out of the way: I think pound for pound, CPJ is the best college football coach in America. At the very worst, he is tied with Urban Meyer and Pete Carroll, IMO. He may not have the hardware they do yet, but I think its just a matter of time.

Time is the key thing here. Although he has had great success wherever he has gone, I think we all need to remember that coaching in a BCS league in Div IA is a different animal altogether. The money involved, the pressure to win, the fanatacism... it's just on a whole different level than either GA Southern or Navy. Yesterday's loss is squarely on CPJ's shoulders. We were out-hustled, out-manned, out-coached... etc. There was no urgency from the team, and the problem was compounded with shoddy coaching decisions.

All that said, I'm willing to give Coach a free pass. That game hurt, and it probably cost us a Top 10 Preseason Ranking going into next year, but that ass-whooping is gonna help us win a National Championship in the next few years. CPJ will learn, and the players will learn that at this level of football, you cannot take any opponent or game lightly. That BS ain't gonna happen again.

Oh yeah, and here's a piece of tail to help us all feel better.

No free pass here; no doubt PJ losses some goodwill with a performance like that right after that big raise and extension.

But I think he is definitely going to learn some new things coaching in a BCS conference about the post season after being head coach at Georgia Southern and Navy, especially about the whole relaxed "reward for a season" approach. Of course, it didn't apply at GSU, where they had playoffs and the post season was deadly serious; at Navy he was easing up on teams with plenty of upper classmen and probably the most self disciplined student athletes in the country. It may not have been the best approach for a team of 70% underclassmen without a military lifestyle.

True, but he also broke the streak. That earns him at least one free pass in my book.

I would much rather beat UGA than win any bowl game except for perhaps the BCS Championship game (where we would never be unless we also beat UGA.)

My attitude my change on that after a seven year streak of our own, but for the near future you get one "free pass" coupon for each UGA win.

He made a step up in competition this year...that inherently means that there is more to learn/know/do at this level.

That was arguably the biggest game CPJ has ever coached in. Yes, Army Navy is a national game, but outside of the military, does anyone care who wins?

At the same time, he might not have the experience to coach from the favored position. He could play the underdog card motivator at GSU, Hawaii, and Navy all he wanted to and it was effective.

I think CPJ takes this experience, and starts the learning process on how to coach with a team that is favored on a big stage.

9 game win season AND we beat UGAG?

Since we have had exactly 4 of those since I have been alive, I think I will give him a pass in his FIRST FREAKING YEAR! Some of you need a new hobby!

P.S. No I don't enjoy losing, which is why I enjoy a 9 win season with a win over UGAG much more than a 7 win season which a win over Syracuse or someone. I also do not enjoy being perceived as a dumbass which is what I would be if I was even arguing about NOT giving him a free pass for the season he had. What exactly is a "free pass"? We won't ask for your firing this year?

He is a coach that is being paid 2+ million dollars each year. He had one month to get ready. We did not even score a touch down.

That deserves no free pass. THIS is settling gentlemen.
 
9-4 with a bowl appearance when we expected to go 3-9. Add to that we won over uga, fsu, and miami all in the same year. I'll "settle" for that.

Does anyone enjoy the fact that we lost - NO. Do we need to think any less of CPJ as a coach for the loss - ABSOLUTELY NOT.

I'm glad I am me. I'd hate to be someone who thinks a 2.3M dollar coach deserves a free pass for getting the team's asses kicked and bringing them in unprepared.
