This was one of the more disturbing losses in the Gailey era. Remember we had them on the ropes on a Thursday night back in '04 (the last time we played them here). We led 17-7 thanks to a solid 1st half from Calvin and PJ Daniels. But...

Remember Reggie Ball scrambling 20 yards backwards, then out of the back of the endzone? That made it 17-9 and led the comeback.

Remember Eddie Royal going 80 yds for a score when we didn't have a corner within 10 yards of him? That made it 20-18. The 2-pointer was even easier to convert.

Then on the ensuing position, Josh Morgan scored on an even easier 54 strike to give VPI a 27-20 lead.

On our final drive, Reggie let loose a wobbling duck, and the Hokies returned the pick for another TD.

All told, VPI outscored us 27-3 in the final 18 minutes to complete a meltdown that still stings in my mind.

As bad as that one was the next one was even worse. At least we competed for part of the game in '04.

Up to that point and since, I have never even heard of another "qb" at any level above Pop Warner running out of the back of his end zone when not on purpose. Still Amazing.

Thanks for the reminder.

RB ought to try Canadian football. Don't they have 20 yard endzones?

just trying to be helpful

That was a horrible loss back in 2004.

However, I may be wrong, but if I recall correctly, Reggie Ball scrambling out of the back of the end zone was against Miami on a Saturday at Grant Field and not in the previous Thursday night game against VT.

I just checked. I was wrong and you were right.

The scramble for a safety was against VT.

Boy, was that an ugly way for us to lose a game.

I think against Miami that year, he scrambled backwards and took about a 20 yard sack in the last few seconds of the first half. That knocked us completely out of FG range and I want to say Chan called a kneel down play from the Miami 45 to kill the clock. We were already down 17-3 or something like that, so that effectively was the end of the game. Just for good measure though, methinks Reggie threw 4 picks in the 2nd half on the way to his worst game statistically.

Edit: that was actually only a 19 yard loss for Reggie, and on the following play we tried and missed a 60 yard field goal. Reggie's number's for that game: 8 for 25, 68 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT, 3 sacks.

It was so easy too. The Miami dbs wouldn't even try to cover our receivers. They just ran to the spot and waited for the ball.

I left early that day.

Not sure that was his worst game statistically either. I think that 6/22, 42 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT, 1 lost fumble, 3 sacks was a bit worse.

D'oh. I conveniently forgot about that one. A little selective memory I guess...
