If somehow we're more than 5 spots ahead of them then that's the only way we can beat UM in the tiebreaker is that right?

No. If 3 teams are 7-1 then the first relevant tiebreaker is rule 4, which is the overall conference record of cross-division opponents.

GT and Miami play the same cross-division opponents. So there are three possible scenarios:

1. VT wins on rule 4.
2. VT is eliminated on rule 4, and Miami wins the head to head tie on rule 1.
3. VT ties Miami and GT on rule 4, and then it falls to rule 7 (BCS ranking). That probably means Miami.

As for the ACC never sending two teams, that's true. But in the hypothetical scenario the ACC has three top-10 teams, which has never happened before either.
