I wonder if we will ever go back to natural grass at BDS

You have to hire a company that maintains the field, not just mowing and such but also reseeding, changing the blend btwn Bermuda and Fescue, continuously patch it up, and returf. It's much more expensive over the long term
Artificial turf also has to be maintained

+1 on #2. Never had slipping or mud issues on the grass field since we returned to grass in 1995. Chris May and his staff consistently had a top 5 surface in the nation. The only couple times I remember the field showing wear was in 2007 during a major drought and several home games in November (3 of 4 wks?); the other was in late 2019 when I feel Toad sabotaged the surface or let it waste away knowing we were going to replace it in the offseason.
We ABSOLUTELY sabotaged the surface in 2019 so we could justify artificial turf.

Would like to see a study, but it feels like turf leads to more injuries than grass.
You don't need a study, just take a gander at all our injuries.

Someone needs to design some sort of fire hydrant cover that looks like Re-Todd on one side and Clown on the other. Double the amount of dogs pissing on them.

It could spew an endless supply of snake oil from both openings.

Negatives:
  • Much higher operating cost
  • Much more significant impact of weather events, like giant mud bowls after thundershowers. Thus, more impact of weather on gameday due to footing differences in a less-even field. Kicking and punting especially affected.
  • Can't practice as much in BDS
  • No other events at BDS (could be a positive in some minds, I guess)
  • Profit!!
High schools can afford the “much higher” operating costs of grass. GT can’t? Really?
Are you seriously complaining about the impact of rain, mud in football? Or are you being sarcastic?

100% this. But this fake turf shit looks like Goof Collins dragged his mudbutt across the entire field. Why tf does the fake field look like dying dormant grass in Late November? It looks so awful on tv
I had told a non GT fan coworker just this past season about how awful our field looked. He watched the GT / Miami game and told me later "you are right. That field is embarrassing"

Was just looking back at the thread when it was announced...

More people than opposed it than I remembered

Please tell me this is a joke
Not a fan. We have a beautiful field.
We have the best field in the country. Wtf
No chance they don't öööö this up
I look forward to the reinstallation of grass in 15 years.
I'm opposed. We have a beautiful field. However much it costs to maintain it, we should spend it.
Tuck
Furf
Worst news in 2020

But not everyone
Artificial grass has come a long way since that terrible green carpet we had at BDS before O'Leary replaced it with natural grass. The modern turf fields are actually nice to play on and dont tear up knees or burn you like the carpet from the old days. People need to do some research and have an open mind about this.
Folks complaining as if they are playing on the field.
This is really not a big deal
It ain't that big of a damn deal. This isn't 1970's AstroTurf
That is got dam beautiful
It's beautiful.

But not everyone
I was against turf from the start.

Don't we have the wiregrass or whatever facilities in south GA? Feel like we have students who could assist.

The artificial turf looks so bad on a 4K feed, like fake lines going up and down the field.

If we're going to have non football events just have the system to swap out the grass so it's not killed during a concert.

Have we had even one non-football revenue-generating event since we've gotten the turf? It seems like it's not even worth mentioning that angle anymore. The experiment has been run. The null hypothesis has been rejected.
