If Bill Curry is not hired...

we also had games on Thursday night. I don't care one way or another, I honestly think being AD has a lot more to do with being a good front man than anything. Theres plently of excuses/endorsements for any of the candidates. The search committee will do their job, and few (if any) of us have a say.

I also believe that BSP gave a tiered order of candidates, not an 1,2,3.. order.

What is your criterion then? It is clear (I will use the word clear) that being a former Tech graduate and/or athlete doesn't do much for you.

I would suggest you may want to add some other criteria to your personal search. Criteria such as: experience, character, charisma, following, etc., may be a good place for you to start. Just a thought, you can use your campaigning issue though because it will get you far along in your interview process.

Your other criteria, that not attending games is a sign of non-support for Tech (however mis-aligned this statement of yours is) will also eliminate just about all, if not all of the other candidates you have high on your list.

Additionally, where do you place Todd Stansbury on your list then?

BJ,
I can't help but wonder what a day on the practice field was like under Bill Curry's coaching. Sometimes you or JD or anyone who played for Coach Curry may share a bit with us about this...
I have no clue as to what all the Athletic Director is responsible for in his day to day job. I can only imagine that it would be an enormous role to fill at GT. I've seen where some have doubts about his qualifications for taking this job as AD. Personally, I can't imagine how he could possibly NOT be qualified...
I've stated in the past that I thought GT needed a saleman. WOW, what an opportunity to get a 2 fer 1 deal w/Bill Curry.
I'm sure many of you readers and posters are MUCH more knowledgable than I about this matter, but for me and my house, Bill Curry seems to be our first choice.

Your post #132899 would have been a perfect exiting point. It was a very good post, tarnished by lesser follow-ups.

BJ might have been a little rough on ya, but it's usually a good idea to give those with first hand experience and knowledge a lot of respect. It's usually not a good idea to lecture a former GT SA, who may...just may...perhaps...possibly...have a little better perspective on BC than you. THWG & Academic Snobs

After reading all the posts, just two quick things.

1) If Bill Curry is to get this job, he has to want it, and has to prove that he really wants it. Bill is no dummy. Don't you think he knows it's his responsibility to win over those that harbor resentment for his flight to Alabama?
Personally, I think it's ridiculous that some still do, but nonetheless, Curry is trying to do something about it.

2) Even though most if not all agree that we need someone to sell the virtues of Ga. Tech, and to energize and grow Tech's support base, some don't like the idea that Bill Curry is doing what every successful person selling anything does. He believes in Ga. Tech, he loves Tech, and he believes in himself.
If he gets the job he wants bad, this is what he will be doing for us.
This is what we need!

Coach Curry is the consumate administrator. He did not do much if any coaching with us defensive linemen, but then he played center, thus he may have worked more with the OL just because of his experience.

Really what Bill Curry did was administrate. He managed the coaches, the practices, the players, the alumni, the media, etc.. He was also very good with the academeic admin. and got respect there because he took them seriously. Just about every lunch had someone attending from the hill (one of our favorite deans). This did not buy us any freebies from the academic admin., but it did give him the ability to interact with them to solve problems.

The other important thing is that he speant an incredible amount of time with his mentors. We all know about his mentoring from Bobby Dodd, not many know about the mentoring he got from Homer Rice. Bill Curry was like a sponge around Homer, and bought into his "total person" concept 100%. He worked with all of us with these same concepts on an ongoing basis, until the time we graduated, (you guys can ask John about this stuff). Many of us at the time thought that many of the things that coach (and Homer Rice) were teaching us at the time were a waste of time, it was not until later in many of our lives that we began to understand the wisdom of it all.

Bill Curry's administration skills, nor his lack of experience as an AD would not concern me in the least.

I will be very glad. I don't appreciate ANYONE who sits around and campaigns for a job before its vacant. Its disrespectful and inappropriate.

God forbid someone desire the AD position at GT. I don't disagree that he's campaigning for the job - it just tells me that he strongly desires the job. Is that so terrible?

Nope. I would consider it posturing which is an intelligent move.
Why would BC not be qualified for this position? Going to a football game for the first time in awhile? Something that happened 20 years ago? Shoot, I was 8. I personally feel that he would be the perfect person to take us forward.
Why? Because from what I've been hearing from those more in the know than myself and from what I've read of his statements(Terrence Moore AJC article) he can take us forward in a hurry. If you don't think replacing our current AD(who some call Braine-less), with someone who has been a coach, leader, motivator(I've heard he does motivational speeches), commentator, analyst and obviously other positions, is a good move, please let me know why.

The major concern I have with Curry is his age. Sure, this job can be performed by old farts who learned the job at a younger age(I'm an OF too and can speak from first hand knowledge), but to LEARN and ADAPT to this job by an inexperienced, older person, and to perform needed, unpleasant tasks is too much to expect from an OF who is set in his ways. No, I think the best fit for Curry, if he really wants to help Tech, would be as a consultant to one of the younger applicants such as Orsini or Stansbury for a few years.

If Bill Curry is not hired - and I think he'd be a good one - there are others who can market GT to the world. I just hope Clough is smart enough to hire one of them.
