you guys can fill in the blank to that line, but my point is our defense is good. Its been really good the past 5 or 6 years. Why fix it?

If there's anyway we can keep Tenuta we should do so.

Hiring a defensive guy like Muschamp makes NO sense to me.

Imagine this: we bring in Jimbo Fisher for offense and leave the D up to Tenuta. Give Giff a raise and we should be set. Throw in Joe Ham at QB coach for good measure.

Honestly I would love us to hire a CEO-type who would let Tenuta run the defense and hire a capable OC. Football has changed a lot in the last 15 years; it's much harder for the HC to be hands-on with either side of the ball when he's out kissing babies, shaking hands, raising money, etc.

amen....Love the Joe Ham idea and there's been a vacuum since coach Hixon left as WR coach. We need a top notch WR coach for some instruction and to push those guys.

just because a HC has a defensive/offensive background, doesn't mean the team will be strong in that particular area. O'Leary was a DC but when he was HC our defense was terrible. Likewise, Chan was regarded as an Offensive guru in the NFL but our offense wasn't great under him.

BUT, if we keep Tenuta, we KNOW we will be set. If our offense was half as good as our D, we'd be Top 25 every year....and I think that's what most want around here.

This has been my concern since the firing of Chan, there is no need to hire a defensive guy unless Tenuta refuses to stay with a new staff. Without Tenuta's defense we would have been a 4-5 win team at best in previous years. So let's not tamper with it, get a young, fiery, offensive tactician in there so we can finaly compete at a high level on both sides of the ball.

That is very true, but given the shape our offense is in it would not hurt to get an proven offensive guy in there who can contribute to the offensive gameplaning rather than one who would primarily be a delegator because offense isn't his field of expertise.

no question about that. I'm just saying we could easily hire a DC to be the next HC as long as he's capable of hiring a qualified OC and managing the program well (like a CEO). The coach's background doesn't matter to me as much as his managerial abilities do.

What are the odds of Tenuta sticking around anyway? I wouldn't think they'd be too good.

So, basically, you want to hire a new coach but not give him the latitude to hire his own people?

I think we need to go in with the expectation that the new coach will bring in his own people (since that's what most coaches want to do). We're already off on the wrong foot if we (the GTAA or whomever) are dictating who to keep and who to bring in from the outside as assitants.

Oh absolutely let's just hope we get the right guy in there wether is an offensive guy or a defensive guy who can deleate to an excellent OC. If we could just match the level of success Tenuta's defensive schemes have had on offense we would all at the very least be going to Jacksoville this time of year every year.

I saw a Tenuta quote that said he hopes to interview for the HC job, but wouldn't mind sticking around as DC. How that plays out is anybody's guess, but that seemed to leave the door open to it.

Well then at least he's got a chance to tie Mac for the all-time lead in winning percentage...

you are correct...he is not staying

he is not a happy guy right now

Huh?

What's he got to not be happy about? He's got an automatic shot at a HC job, gets a free bowl game vs a patsie to showcase his ability, and worst case for him is he gets let go and Tech covers his two year contract too, while he goes to DC for some other school that pays him just as much.

Don't forget he's got a multi-year contract with Tech. It actually costs us money to fire him.

Don't shoot the messenger

I wouldn't be happy either if I were Tenuta right now. That doesn't mean that I would eliminate the possibility of staying. I am sure that he will have some good opportunities both at the HC and DC level.

The new HC needs to be able to hire who he wants, but I can't imagine a new HC bringing in a more qualified DC than Tenuta.

In order for Tenuta to stay:

1. The new HC has to want Tenuta
2. Tenuta needs to like the new HC
3. We need to have a HC in place and HC needs to decide if he wants to retain Tenuta before he has to make decisions about other opportunities.

I think that realistically Tenuta is probably gone, but you never know.
