Mathematically, deferring gives a small advantage. If your team has more possessions in the second half, then the team has more control over the tempo in the second half. It's the same choice as picking defense first in OT, although OT is a much bigger advantage.
See the Miami game last year. We had a 10 minute drive, IIRC, in the third quarter. If we received in the first half, Miami would have gotten another possession in the second half.
I suppose most coaches receive for "momentum." You've got an illusory advantage through the first half, but that lead will increase confidence or whatever. I don't know, teams at P5 or NFL levels need to focus on execution, regardless of circumstances.
