what would it take to win you back?

(Cross posting because it was locked on the Hive. Please do not restate old gripes about Gailey nor criticize anyone who dares to answer as anti-GT. I am just curious whether the anti-Chan crowd can come back.)

He lost me last year but I was ready and willing (and HOPING) to be proven wrong this year. I really expect a win this week, but that alone would not win me back as a CCG supporter (will always be a GT supporter, regardless.)

For me, it will take nine wins (seven more) and one of those wins better be UGA. Eight wins with a win over UGA might put me back on the fence.

I am not asking for any opinions on whether anyone else's opinion is reasonable or rational.

I am just curious how many of those who are disappointmented can change their mind.

If he can pull out 9 wins again this year, including UGA. And AT LEAST 8 wins for the next 2-3 years, all years beating UGA and winning whatever bowl we go to, then maybe I'll acknowledge his turnaround.

But a couple of decent(not even good) seasons won't do much for me after what we have all put up with in recent years.

I'm in this group as well..It will take 8-9 wins this year and like you, one has to be against the mutts, another top 10-15 recruiting class after a bowl win, but the second he starts throwing his name around for other jobs I would fire his ass in a second this year. That made us look like crap last year. Not that professional teams were interested in him, but his eagerness to get out of here. Its tough replacing a coach at Tech and I was really hoping he would make it.

I can't say whether I am anti- or pro-Chan. The thing that scares the **** out of me is what happened when I was at Tech. Pepper Rodgers was the coach and the sentiment was nearly exactly what you see today. We had a coach who regularly put up winning seasons and was liked by his players. There was a (relatively) powerful segment of our alumni that pushed him out and gave us Bill Curry.

For some damn reason, Curry is credited for bringing Tech back to prominence. All I remember is 1-9-1, 1-10, 6-5, 3-8, 6-4-1, 9-2-1 (All-American Bowl), 5-5-1.

Granted, Pepper's 34-31-2 record after 6 years (with one Peach Bowl) was not great, but compared to Chan...

Eight or more wins including UGA would do it for me.

On the Rodgers situation, Rodgers had the program going in the wrong direction during his final year. Recruiting had become a sad joke. Further, Rodger's collosal ego caused him to be unpopular among influential alumni. The promise of getting Curry to replace him, although Bill was untried and unproven as a college coach, was the final nail in Pepper's coffin. Curry has a great personality and makes a good impression on people.

I'd have to disagree on just about all counts.

Recruiting became a joke because the AA let our facilities go to crap. The football team was dressing in a tiny building on the corner of the field. The astroturf was frayed to the point of showing asphalt from below. We still had a track around the field and the south stands. The bleachers at the baseball field were warped 2x12's. There was no Edge Center. We were taking drownproofing at the freshman gym. We should have been ashamed.

Rodger's actually had very little ego. I will say that he was one hard partier though. That's what got him in trouble. There were some mean parties up at Canterbury with Billy Lothridge and his crew, plus roaming the town with Grizzard and Hudspeth.

Curry was the bastard with the ego ("We'll bring the cheaters to their knees")...not much different than any other Tech player from those years and earlier. They still own this place when it comes to football. Curry was their man. So was Chan. Just ask George Morris.

Obviously you were much closer to Pepper and I am well aware of the poor state of our athletic facilities. Bill Curry faced a similar recruiting obstacle.

I will counter on only one point and that is the matter about ego and it is based on my one personal experience with Pepper. It took all of about 15 seconds for him to piss me off when I talked to him on the phone as he bellowed, "Don't you know who I am? I'm Pepper Rodgers. Do you know how much I get for my speeches? I am speaking to your (civic organization) only as a personal favor to (a former bulldog player that I shall leave nameless). The very least your (civic organization) could do is to provide my transportation....." and on and on with his little tirade until I interrupted by telling him I would pass on the message and then hung up.

Bill, on the other hand, has always been cordial and friendly to me. He always made me feel comfortable when I was around him. I wouldn't deny that he has an ego and we all do to some extent. But Bill keeps it under control much better than Pepper.

Visit http://www.pepperrodgers.com/ if you haven't already done so to get a picture of Pepper's idea of his own importance. Not my notion of "very little ego."

Minimum to win me back is 8-4 on the season with a win over UGA.

Obviously you were much closer to Pepper...Bill Curry.

That's interesting. When I encountered Pepper, I was an 18-19 year old (legal drinking age back then) weekday evenings in Buckhead at the bars. He was pretty much on top of the world and everybody's friend. He was hanging with the "In" crowd of Atlanta and had time for everybody. His teams were middle of the road, but not ending with losing records. I'll grant you that he wasn't working near as hard as we expect coaches to work today. The Old Guard was pissed...big time. The students loved him.

Curry came along and it was like "WTF'? He won an early game (Memphis State, Rip Scherrers' future team...good riddance) his first season in September. He beat Alabama away to open the next season before the students even returned to campus and never won again until after I graduated. And the whole time we heard nothing but self-righteous BS behind mirrored sunglasses.

I wasn't exactly a Pepper fan (any more than I'm a Chan fan), but if they give us a reincarnation of Curry, it will be 2015 before we sniff a winning season again. That bothers me very much.

Simple. Quit putting teams on the field that aren't ready to play.

I wouldn't worry about that. As much as I like and admire Bill, I don't believe you will see his clone on the sidelines. Or Pepper's either. So that discussion is a moot point.

Whoever the coach is, I always hope it is someone who will unite the fan base. Obviously, Chan has not done that. Notice, I said fan base as there is no way anyone can unite all the fans...it's like herding cats.

Ross had good success and so did the O'Leary/Friedgen combo. Trouble is, we didn't pay 'em enough to keep 'em. And now we're broke? So whattcha gonna do?

One thing for certain. No one wants to be a part of a program where the fans wallow in self-pity, fight amongst themselves, pitch fits and blame anyone and everyone else for a loss. I'm not saying we shouldn't feel bad about a loss. I'm not saying we shouldn't critique our mistakes. I'm not saying we shouldn't criticize bad performances and decisions. Our losses can be "wins" if we learn from them and build on what we have learned. A loss to a bad team this week can often translate into a win over a good team the following week. And each loss for Tech ought to translate into another nail in UGA's coffin on November 24.

To paraphrase Tom Hanks, "There's no crying in football." Or Rocky's brother-in-law who said, "He's not getting beat. He's getting mad."

There's plenty of football left this year to determine if Chan's the Man. If he wins eight or more, including UGA, I'd like to see him stay (if he wants to). But IMHO he has a thing or two to recognize about college ball.

Based on the Reggie situation, I have never had faith in Chan, but, until further notice, he is the coach. I want a win at home, where the Jackets don't seem to rise to the occassion as we wish they would. I want a win on the road when we are favored to win. I want to see the qb getting "coached' when he comes off the field, like Friedgen always did. I want Chan to realize how really important the UGA game is, it is obvious that UGA knows how big it is. If Chan can accomplish the above noted issues, I may forgive him for the four years of putting the faithful through sheer torture with RB at the helm, maybe. But, unless an Old Gold steps forward with a giant donation to pay for a new coach and pay Chan off, he's our coach, so, I hope and cheer for the best out of the Jackets. The Clemson game is HUGE.

I'd almost bet the farm that Chan was a dawg fan growing up in 'Mericus and that he would have went to UGag instead of UF if Dooley had offered. Hey I don't know but its just a guess.

He seems to go out of his way to NOT say anything positive about the Tech traditions.

When has he said anything about Tech traditions and why would he?

No more than 1 loss the rest of the regular season, and it can't be against uga. Preferable not against Clemson either. I do not like Clemson.

I need to see some intensity from our players. I blame the coaching staff. If the upper classmen aren't getting it done, then put them on the bench and play the younger ones; that's the most obvious way to get a player's attention.
