I'm starting to wonder if our Defense....

is better now than it was during the Tenuta years. I went back and watched parts of the Miss. St. game and IMO we are playing better defense consistently.

I will be the first to state that JT won and kept us in a lot of games during the previous coaching regimes era. But we gave up a ton of huge plays under JT if we were caught in the wrong blitz package.

This year, we have given up a few big plays but no where near the number in previous years. I like the gap control defense Wommack has instituted and it seems our SA's have bought into the package as well.

I, like many of you, would like to see more pressure on the QB from our front 4, but it has not been bad overall. I wonder if Wommack will open up alittle more defensively with his blitz packages with a decent throwing team in Duke coming to town this week.

It seems like TEs always tore us up under JT. This D is 10x better than last years.

This week will be the first real test of our pass defense (it's the one matchup where Duke appears to have an advantage) - I'll be watching to see how we hold up when the pressure isn't there. I'll also be watching to see who they attack and what they do to avoid Burnett.

I call two picks for Burnett.

It's difficult to say. I would argue we faced better offensive competition last year through this point in the year.

I honestly believe our defense this year is better than any under Tenuta.

1) We actually make adjustments to our gameplan. If something isn't working, we adjust on the fly or at halftime. (imo, this is what killed us at Clemson 2 years ago, and in other games I won't mention).

2) We don't blitz as much, but when we do it's very effective. We play a much smarter scheme, imo.

3) We tackle much, MUCH better overall! This has been the biggest single difference to me, and has made the most improvement in our defense.

4) We don't play 10 yards off every WR because we're afraid to get beat down the field (because the rest of our defense and the water boy are blitzing the QB).

time of possession is better this year and more 1st downs and sustained drives all that helps the D

I am worried about good passing teams like ugag.

I think we had stronger LB/DB under Tenuta but some of that is personel.

When we play UM, F$U, and UNC we will be able to see how the D holds up. But if O continues to control the ball it will be impossible to compare.

PJ's got the fear of God in them.

I believe that is the main thing.

You are held accountable this year if you F up. Last year, Gayley would pat your head and say "Thats ok, you gave it your best." (ala Bobby Cox).
This year, CPJ banishes you the the depths of hell if you even think about goofing up.

We play with purpose, drive, determination, and with the knowledge that they are capable of winning every game with CPJ and it shows.

Couldn't agree more. Will be interesting to see how much zone, man, or combo coverage we play this Saturday.

Personally I would like to see us play a lot of man and free which would allow Burnett the opportunity to roam around in the secondary and make plays.

I think we've faced a whole lot of very, very bad offensive teams so far, and our view of our defense is skewed by that.

Our LBs this year are wretched. Duke won't expose them, but Clemson very well might.

HUGE difference. In past we seem to try and make more big hits and not wrap up the ball carrier.

I have seen very few missed tackles out of this group thus far. My inkling is that Wommack spends time every day in tackling drills emphasizing the wrap up part of the tackle.

I don't think that can really be seen until our LBs are all healthy again. The DBs, however, I think are much better now - too much being beat deep before, which is as much what coverage is called as it is the players' ability to play to the scheme.

I think our LBs are just as good, AB is physically a freak and the rest have all been more than sufficient in part-time roles (has anyone really been a full time player at this position yet?).

LOL. Notre Dame fans are saying that Tenuta has made them a much better tackling team.

Tenuta has faults (lack of adjustment in the game plan being the foremost fault) but tackling fundamentals is not one of them. Our team was a good tackling team with him and the tackling ability of this year's team is (at least partially) attributable to him (JWD being the perfect example).

I think our D is going to lose us some more games with teams marching down the field at the end like VT did.

Sure VT had some help but they are one of the worst O's we will face.

I hate to be so negative, It is JMHO.

Tenuta made us a much better tackling team when he got here. You have to be a solid tackler in Tenuta's defense, because you will get burned with help over the top(especially the corners with no safety help).

IMO that's no different than any of the Tenuta years though.

We beat the hell out of the hapless offensive teams with our defense and then struggle with anybody that had any semblance of competency. It's not like the ACC has been filled with offensive powerhouses the last 6 years.

And of course this NEVER happened to our Defense under Tenuta!

I think that we tackled better last year, but when we moved to MAN pass coverage we did significantly better than under Tenuta.

The LBs seem to be playing lanes well, so we rarely give up big plays but give up plenty of short ones. Even on missed tackles the opponent is slowed down enough to stop them quickly.
