In a thread on the hive, it is suggested Ugag

The only reason for this change in the nadlickers want all summer to prepare for us. Sorry I say not no but hell no!!!!!. PJ is going to make this a rivalry again and I relish beating them at the end of the year and making them have the pain all winter and summer long. It was so nice during the GOL wins for three years in a row.

Not rumor, talks in progress.

Drad ought to be flooded with emails and calls from the whole Gt nation, to not agree to moving that game. With P.J. here now, this is exactly what the nad lickers want, the whole off-season to prepare for an offense they will only see once every year. I say absolutely NOT, the tradition should live on, the last game of the year, every year, like all the great arch rivalry games. i.e. Auburn/Ala. , Ohio State/Mich. Gt/Uga game...

Don't move the ****ing game!

I'm a GT alumn, my father is a UGAY alumn. We like the game being during Thanksgiving. If this changes I will be pissed!

Disagree. I think the reasons for the interest are twofold, 1) money...big TV $$ for an early season nationally televised game, 2) they're focusing on winning the SEC at that time of year. Rough stretch of conference games and, if they're successful, preparation for the SECCG. The last thing they or the SEC want is for us to knock them off and screw up their bowl deals and take some of the shine off the SECCG. In fact, we probably should be thinking the same way. If we really believe we're BCS caliber or will be, we should be focusing on winning the league at that time of year. Winning or losing to ugag is a huge deal in an of itself. I don't have a problem putting it first thing on the year. If you win, it's a huge jump start to the season. If you lose, you have time to achieve your secondary goals without the downer it was for us preparing for the ACCCG.

Not to mention, in early September we get to play them with half their team in jail, and with us as close to full strength as we'll ever be.

The only tradition I care about is the new tradition of us losing 23 of the last 30 games.

I can see the advantages of it (from both sides), but I think I'd prefer the game staying where it is. It's just part of my Thanksgiving now, you know? Sure, it's been part of ruining my Thanksgiving recently, but c'est la vie.

Also, the "real" rivalry games are played at the end of the season.

And even the not so great. The bottom line is that in most cases the last game of the season is for state rivalries. What sort of asslicker would want to change that?

To me, playing it as the first game still sounds extremely busch league. The rivalry game should be the culmination of the season for both teams, just as it is for almost every other intrastate rivalry out there. The game is not some footnote of the season, hopefully shuffled away from the eyes of the pollsters for the losing team. It is VERY much part of the season as a whole for both teams.

In other words, the game should stand at the same level as a conference championship game for both teams. Despite UGA's recent dominence, both teams should equally want to win their state and their conference. It makes sense then, to put both championship games at the end of the season.

I am not sure it matters so much whether or not it's first, last or in the middle. There is no bad time to beat your rivals. There is no good time to lose to them. It ends even a good season when you lose at the end. But, how much effect would it have on the season to start with a loss?

With one child an ECU grad and one a student, they are feeling the downside of losing to a state rival early in the season today.

Well, I for one supported this move earlier and I don't want to flip flop now. Our best chance to pic up some victories would be to play early in the year. They are deeper than we are late in the year and it hurts instate recruiting pretty badly I think to lose the rival game at the end of the year. Or the joke bowl game for that matter.

complete non issue. There are pros and cons. I think generally this would help us b/c they have more depth and potential injuries would hurt us more.

Email I sent to DRad:

Mr. Radakovich-

I am sorry to bother you, but I had just one quick question. There is a rumor
that we are in talks to move the UGA rivalry game to the beginning of the
season rather than the end.

If this is true (and I hope that it is not), I would like to express my
reservations about this course. Moving this game to the beginning of the season
would make it nearly meaningless to either team, since an early-season loss can
almost always be recovered from. In addition, this would give UGA more time to
prepare for our new rather unique offensive system.

You would never see Auburn and Alabama move their game to the beginning of the
season.
Nor Clemson-USC.
Nor UF-FSU.
Etc.

If this was just a rumor and nothing more, then please accept my apologies. I
have been very proud of the job you have done with our teams and look forward
to you leading our AD for many years to come.
His response:

Thanks Chris, there is nothing substantive to that rumor. It would be difficult
to acheive given the schedules of the two schools. In fairness to your argument
remember Colorado- Colorado St; Kentucky-Louisville and Iowa - Iowa State play
early in the season.

Thanks again.
So it looks to me like there is nothing to this now, but it isn't something DRad would necessarily be opposed to.

Side note: I sent this email Saturday night, and had a response by Sunday morning. Wow.

I sure hope DRad thinks more of this game and rivalry than those other 3 examples. No comparison at all.

and i think we need to be able to spell "achieve" before we can do it

Not in caliber, but they are good comparisons in that they are all intrastate rivalries that are inter-conference matchups. Their scheduling issues would be similar to ones we would face if we wanted to move the GT-UGA game.

I say we play them on a Thursday night. Prisoners on work release have to be in by six PM. How many whould that keep off the field?

I think we were trying to get this done several years back, and ugag shot it down, so now all the sudden we get a new coach with a very unique offense and now they want it changed? I think we should tell them to go fu*k themselfs and leave it alone.

Move it.

I agree that they might only want to do this because of the PJ offense, and while we have PJ it might be an advantage to play late, but think about the pros and cons.

Con: UGA gets more time to prepare for the triple O.
Con: Breaks tradition

Pro: I fully expect us to be playing a VERY important game the following weekend nearly every year as long as PJ is here. I actually think this is UGA's angle as well.
Pro: Way more chance of national TV coverage. We are often passed over for big TV coverage due to the plethora of rivalry games that weekend.
Pro: Our STUDENT athletes are actually entering a tough stretch in school around Thanksgiving while UGA has no such distractions. Playing them early allows our guys to watch excessive film and focus on the big game instead of classes.
Pro: Depth is less critical in the beginning of the year. Playing early means we are much more likely to be closer to full strength; an advantage for us.
Pro: Suspensions are served in the first game. UGA players might actually behave knowing the first game isn't Southwestern Michigan A&T.
Pro: More likely to be ranked pre-season. This might be conspiracy theory, but UGA will be ranked and some people might want to see both of us ranked for increased TV ratings, to make UGA look better (win or lose), etc.
Pro: UGA will be our toughest game for the foreseeable future. Win and we are catapulted into the MNC hunt. Lose and we still have a chance of clawing back into the BCS. Losing late kills your poll rankings.
Pro: Better bowls. Losing the last game hurts your bowl selection.
Pro: Playing before school starts could free up some student tickets for sale at $50+ a pop. I bet this is a key UGA angle.
Pro: UGA always looks worst the first game. They seem to take longer to get in sync. Offenses take longer to get in sync. The games are likely to be low scoring.

Some of these pros are not overwhelming now with PJ, but if we ever lose PJ, I would kill to have the Dawgs early where the playing field is as level as it can be.
