Interesting Person present at Tech Practice today.

Maybe Groh has the "blue print" to figuring out the Iowa offense. :rotfl:

Could be that with Monken leaving that leaves a spot on the staff. You could bump Wommack to S T Cord and make Groh Def Cord.

Do you think Wommack would want, what would basically be a downgrade? Wouldn't Groh be more likely to come in as ST and then next year move up to DC if Wommack fails? Also with the coaching vacancy we would be missing a RB coach if this happens. Monken coached ST and RBs.

Groh might not be a bad hire. His defenses were pretty stout and it wasn't that long ago that UVA was a good team. But, I wonder how long he'd stick around. Also, how much longer are we going to have Giff?

To whoever was doubting him. Groh's fall from grace really happened recently and I think more was due to the offense sucking. (Partly because of his son as OC for several years) In 07 his D ranked 23rd. in 06 they were 17. 04 they were 18th. Now in the years I didn't mention they weren't so good, but their worst ranking wasn't any worse then where we are now.

FWIW he went 6-3 against us. (1-1 vs CPJ).

I wouldn't have a problem with him being on our staff next year. He's a good person and with the right personnel seemed to be a pretty good coordinator. Didn't know this till a minute ago but after the trivia question yesterday, Groh was the Air Force DC when ELI ran over them in 78.

Pepper never gets proper credit for his understanding and innovation where the X's and O's were concerned. If he had ever been locked down serious like some other coaches he might have been one of the greatest. He just wanted other things out of life.

maybe assistant head coach---admin help, something like that. Or maybe he was just in the neighborhood. His kid needs a gig, too, doesn't he?

I would take Groh in a second!

Someone on uva's scout board is saying that their co-workers daughters friend's aborted baby said Groh is headed to the Dolphins.

Interesting information. Thanks.

I would venture to guess that CPJ's offense has piqued Al's interest seeing as how he's got more of a defensive mindset. Anyone given a new puzzle will want to try to learn more about it. I wouldn't be surprised if Al was just picking CPJ's offensive brain while CPJ is picking Al's defensive brain.

No way Groh comes in as special teams coach.

No way he comes in as A-Backs coach.

No way anything can be done with Wommack after a championship season. Not to mention the fact that we didn't have depth to begin with. Not to mention the Robert Hall, Kyle Jackson, Taylor, and Anderson injuries.

Hopefully, Giff Smith is DC in waiting.

Fun conversation, though.

I've always hated Groh because he really owned us (err Gailey mostly). But I had always read about what a stand-up guy he was off the field. Never heard anything bad about him.

Are we being delusional thinking about him as our DC? ala Bud Foster conspiracies amongst ugaggers?

keep on dreaming guys

You really think CPJ would be openly interviewing some guy right in front of Wommack? In any case, Al Groh will be a DC in the NFL by next season.

Al Groh is a special consultant for the OB. He's helping Wommack scheme for the Hawkeyes.

As much as I'd love to have Groh as DC there is no way CPJ would interview candidates while Wommack is still on the job.

So either Wommack's post-bowl termination/resignation as DC is already a done deal (which doesn't eliminate the possibility he's staying in some other capacity) or Groh just stopped by for the hell of it.

Wow, tho - that would jack our entire staff into the most feared in the ACC (except, of course, for our not-so-special teams).

Somehow this doesn't feel absolutely improbable.
Ordinarily I would agree but scheming for Iowa isn't very involved. They aren't as fancy as they are effective. Its not hard to figure out what they are doing its just difficult to stop because they are very good at it.
