Iowa got screwed

Iowa coach should have just led the team off of the field and forfeited.

GO JACKETS!!

Looked to me like the punt receiver was trying to signal the other members of the team on where to go. When he was doing that, it wasn't even clear that he would be able to catch the ball, in spite of the fact that he was the deep man.

I have viewed it 4 times, and I don't see it hit the ground. Without slow motion replay, maybe I am just missing it. Where does it hit the ground? I agree, that if it did hit the ground, it becomes a free ball for the receiving team to pick up, fall on, or let bounce more.
It hits the ground about 5-10 yards in front of where he ended up fielding it and about a 0.5 second earlier.

WOW, you're right. You can see the shadow of the ball on the field as it bounces up. That needs at least to be explained. And WTH is an "illegal fair catch signal" anyway? If the ball hits the ground before he catches it, then what does it matter whether what he was doing was a legal fair catch signal or not?

I guess I'm the only one who agrees with the referee's call then. I'm not trolling, the kid was waving his left arm like a g d windmill while pointing all over the field with his right.
But doesn't the ball hitting the ground and bouncing back up negate any fair catch call, legal or otherwise?

And what is an ILLEGAL fair catch SIGNAL anyway? He wasn't anywhere near where the ball would ultimately land or bounce to when he was waving his arms. Where does the ref get the idea that he can know what was in the player's mind when he was so far away from that point and waving both arms, obvoiusly trying to direct the other players where to go.

It didn't hit the ground, did it?
Yes, it most definitely did. At the Iowa 49 YO about a foot from the sideline, and then bounced into the returner's arms.

And there is NO WAY anyone would think that was a fair catch signal. He was clearly signaling to his teammates to stay away from the ball.

So, yeah, the refs ööööed Iowa.

But I don't like Kirk Ferentz anyway, and I'm still pissed about losing the 2010 Orange Bowl. So . . . öööö 'em.

Similar situation on a kickoff in the Bama/TN game. Two men back for UT. The receiver on the side away from where the ball was kicked motioned with his arms and it counted as a fair catch when the other guy caught it. So UT ball on the 3 instead of the 25.

Apparently under the new rules if anyone back in a receiving position makes anything resembling a fair catch signal it is valid.

That's ridiculous

The way I understand it is once the ball hits the ground the fair catch signal is negated.
No. Even if the ball hits the ground, you can’t return a punt after giving a fair catch signal. The ball is dead wherever it is received. A fair catch signal essentially indicates to the coverage team to auto pursuing the return man

That call was atrocious unless you are a Minnesota fan then it was great.
