Is it time for CPJ to retire after this season?

Even if Cpj pulls out a 8-4 season, it seems like the mood of fan base has swung too far against him. Feeling like Ccg last few years round here.
If we get things straightened up enough to win a couple of the bigger games, about which it's hip right now to make cracks about how we have no chance in, the mood will swing right back. I think it's silly to look at games like yesterday's and try to make guesses about how we'll do against VPI, Miami and Georgia. I've got no doubt you can go back through the archives and find posts following the UNC games in 2014 and 2016 about how Georgia was undoubtedly to curbstomp us.

Beating ga alone will probably mean he stays another year.

Beating 2/3 Miami, Clemson, vt and losing to ga would be more of a toss up.

Shit happens, but it would be prudent to see how USF's season and ours turn out before jumping to hysterics.

Wish I could like this twice. Solich was fired 2 years after playing in the national championship because they wanted to switch to an offense that kids would like more. 15 years later they've never come remotely close to that again and are only getting further away. Recruiting has been worse whether they ran spread or pro-style.

Nebraska was trending down because they're in ööööing Nebraska. Not because of the coach that was actually keeping them relevant.
There's plenty of examples of programs that fire coaches whose best days seem to be behind them, only to regret it for years as they struggle to find a replacement.

Think about Fulmer. He was 153-52 (.745) when they fired him after 2008. Since he was fired UT is 53-50 (.515).
Or think about our own Ralph Friedgen. He was 75-50 (.600) when they fired him after 2010. Since he was fired MD is 32-49 (.395).

Of course, the flip side is that sometimes you fire Mike Shula and hire Nick Saban, or you fire Paul Hackett and hire Pete Carroll, or you fire Ron Zook and hire Urban Meyer. There aren't many institutional endeavors that are as dependent upon the guy at the top as college football.

I actually have no problem with firing a coach whose best days are clearly behind them. Frank Beamer and Bobby Bowden are two clear examples. They were old, their programs had trended downward and were not ever going to go back to where they were. It was time.

I'm just not convinced at all that we're there. I think we're in more of a position where we have a pretty good program but have some consistent glaring flaws (defense and ST) that we can't seem to address. Since we literally just adopted a new defensive scheme and hired a new staff, I think they at least deserve the chance to try to address the defensive problems before we throw the baby out with the bathwater. If they still can't do it, then we have to accept that the problem is systemic and move on.

Agreed.

Bowden was 80 and Beamer was almost 70 when they stepped down. CPJ just turned 61. It's not like he's out of energy or has stopped caring.

So often these good coaches get fired because of personality conflicts in the organization. If CPJ gets fired, that'll be a big part of it. When you're embattled you need as many friends as you can get – that includes in the fan base and among the media.

Maybe someone will hire him away like NCST did with Ted Roof.

Good point. I'm missing Ted Roof now.

Past performance is not indicative of future results. You are correct. Frost will rue the day he left Central Florida. Nebraska has some built in disadvantages in today's college environment.

Those are my thoughts exactly. I'm sure I'll catch hell for this but I think cpj deserves more time. I know it's year 11 but we just started trying to up our recruiting game and made a change on defense. I keep seeing that our main problem is not getting the recruits and lack of defense. You don't fix that overnight but at least we are trying now.

Until I hear a name that can turn the program around in two years I think we have to ride it out with cpj. He has shown that he can do it in the past. Let's hope the new recruiting efforts pay off and the defense can get it together. If not, we can roll the dice but I'm not convinced bringing in a new coach will make us any better than we have been for the last 20+ years. With that being said, if we don't win 7+ games this year, I would start shopping.

I did not want Gailey fired. I have supported CPJ and appreciate what he has accomplished. I believe he took the program to a better place than Gailey had achieved. But, two of the past three years have been losing seasons and this one could well be. But, for all those ready to swing the axe be willing to give your new guy three to five years. Transitioning from a team recruited to run CPJ’s spread option to a different offense will take time. The cupboard will be bare. See Bill Curry’s first two years. They made B*** L**** look like Vince Lombardi.

You guys are out of your minds. Coach Johnson is a brilliant coach. How many teams can put up the offensive numbers his teams do. If we could only play defense we might actually have something.
Here are the facts you may not agree with them but there still facts. We could play Clemson and Georgia 10 times and they will beat us ten times. The only way we beat either one of them as they do something stupid and turn the ball over like we did last week and we get very very lucky. They may one player on our team that could take the starting job away from the Georgia player. The truth is, in college football today, the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Be honest, if you were a four or a five star football recruit in the state of Georgia would you pick Georgia Tech over UGA? Would you pick Georgia Tech over Clemson? Would you pick Georgia Tech over Alabama? If you were truthful with yourself answer to all three questions would be no. Now answer this question? Well the truth is, if you are a four or five star recruit you’re not thinking about 40 years down the road and what a college degree from a great institution will get you, you’re thinking about how I’m getting to the NFL You’re not thinking about going to class, and actually having a study, you’re thinking about playing football at a football factory school, and three years running your ticket to a pro contract making big bucks. If you were to come to Georgia Tech you would actually have to go to class, do the work, and Study. No somewhere you were going to argue that if we had a different offense of system we would get some of these players. And if you really believe that you were kidding yourself. College football has changed in the last 10 years. In fact college football is ruining it self. How many years in a row are people going to settle for Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Georgia and a few others playing year After year in the college football playoffs. After a period of time the majority of fans will get tired of watching the same schools over and over and over. College football attendance across the country has already fallen, because most teams actually have no chance of ever getting to the playoffs. Therefore fans don’t buy tickets, they stay home watch it on TV and have a very casual interest
If you let me big 10 teams and you can have the rest of college football teams and will bet $1000 every year, at the end of 10 years I would almost bet you I would have won $10,000 and you would have won zero. Because of recruiting and the big factory football schools spending millions and millions and millions of dollars other schools cannot compete and Georgia Tech is one of them. I wish what I was saying was not true and some of you on here will not agree, but it’s a fact. Coaching can only take you so far. There’s an old saying in coaching, you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit. I’m not saying that our kids are chickenshit I am by those boys and pull for them every week that they are doing the best they can with the God-given talent that They have. I think considering the talent we have Coach Johnson and his staff do a heckuva job. Once again like I said many of you will be here to have your head in the sand believe all we got to do is get a new coach and everything will be better. All of the sudden they will be able to wave a magic wand that will make Georgia Tech a school that everybody wants to come to even though they have the study their ass off and work the tail off, and go to class. Also how many of these kids want to be an engineer. I don’t remember there being an easy calculus class at Georgia Tech.

TL;DR - IIWII
