Is Notre Dames President a liar or a fraud?

And got absolutely obliterated. They shouldn't have been in the game. That game could have been 100-0 wasn't much different as it was.
They went undefeated that season, beating teams ranked @8, @10, 17, and 18, and the unranked teams they beat included Miami, BYU, and @Southern Cal.

Not sure how you can say they shouldn't have been in the game with a season like that. It's a better regular season than a lot of national champions have.

and they would've won it too, ... if not for that meddling deer antler spray

this was the biggest surprise to me. I have no memory of them going 12-0 that year.. or being in that game. :turbonoes:

That's because they barely beat Purdue, had to go to OT to beat Stanford, barely beat BYU, somehow they lucked up and beat Pitt in 3OT after being down 20-6 in the 4th qtr., only beat a horrible, 2-win BC team by 2 TD's, and only beat USC by 9 the same year USC lost it's bowl to some sorry 6-7 team that snuck into a bowl. :hsugh:

Amazing. ND and Kansas are paying Cheeseburger Charlie Weis $24 million to NOT coach.

Those ranked teams finished 15, unranked, 5, and 22. The 22 was an 8-5 Michigan team that didn't deserve to be in the top 25. So they beat 1 top 15 team and 1 top 5 team. Quality wins but they were not impressive enough to be in the championship game that year. Everybody saw it.

So you would have kept the only undefeated team in the nation, which beat four ranked teams along the way, out of the championship game?

I'm not saying they were the best team in the nation (obviously they weren't), but to try to say that they didn't have a great season or belong in the national championship game is crazy to me. I hope that if we manage to go undefeated this season that logic isn't applied to keep us out of the playoffs, even if some if the ranked teams we play end up unranked.

You're really in a pickle with that choice. I get where you're coming from, and no I don't think you can keep an undefeated team out of that game. I think there were better teams that deserved a shot too. I really think that season was the tipping point for the playoff decision, and I can see why.

Fair enough, I can agree with that.

Father Jenkins says that he could see two separate collegiate athletic associations — one following the semiprofessional model, the other dedicated to preserving what he calls “the essential educational character of college athletics.” In belonging to the latter, he says, Notre Dame would be just fine, financially and otherwise.
sounds like ND would leave major college athletics, hey, another reason to start paying players

Yeah. Kinda like that undefeated team in 1990 that barely beat a bunch a teams and even tied another. Wins are overrated. Quality losses... Now there's fun football.

Just like playoffs would kill college football and all ADs are staunchly against it.

A CFP system and paying players is not the same thing at all.
In this context it is, because I guarantee you Notre Dame would not end the cash cow that is Notre Dame football just because they have to share the pie with the players.

They will fight like hell against it, and I'll even buy that they sincerely believe it's not the right thing to do, but there's approximately zero percent chance they'd drop out of big time football just because they have to pay players.

In the context of AD being against it yes, but it is not the same at all, because IMO, paying players would kill so much. But I don't want to highjack the thread.

The CFP system is the awesomeness that we all wanted and demanded. Screw the ADs on that one.
