Is Russell Wilson the nest Reggie Ball?

I would say that Reggie Ball has taken 20 years worth of heat and wanting him removed from the record books because he made some mistakes is just plain ridiculous. IF nothing else he poured his heart out on the field. He significantly contributed to some BIG wins, like Auburn (twice) and #3 Miami at the Orange Bowl. The fact is that we never had a consistent QB and he was the biggest "gamer" of the bunch. And he managed to keep himself out of the news unlike his younger, mayble more talented brother. Oh and I am pretty sure he could still whip the asses of most of us pseudo big men on these message boards.
 
Maybe I did not articulate well. All I was saying was, what are the chances that after all of the preseason hype, that Russell Wilson dissappoints. I happens a lot. Most notably Reggie Ball here at Tech, or the QB for Clemson last year, or Clausen at Notre Dame. He has been hailed as the next Philip Rivers, and the savior of the program. Thats a not of pressure, and I think it's highly likely that he will not live up to it. Similar to Reggie Ball.

They're similar QB's in that they're undersized and quick, yet they are pass first QB's with a great ability scramble. You guys just love to skewer someone and take everything they say way out of proportion.

And it was not meant to be a slam against Reggie. I just feel like Wilson is being praised for such a great season and he wasn't even the full time starter at the beginning of the season.

I can't see it as preseason hype - it's fueled from what he was able to show late last year consistently. Sure, there's a chance that the talk about RW is just hype but from looking at his stats for one season, I wouldn't use the phrase "highly likely".

Also, I watched the UNC vs. NCSU game after we lost to UNC. UNC's defensive backfield was no joke last season, especially with Trimmane Goddard at the helm. Russell's passing picked UNC's defense apart. (not that Cam's interceptions didn't also help NCSU win) That was the one full game that I watched him play in and he was making a lot of smart choices in and out of the pocket with accurate throws (on the run no less) which was pretty impressive to me since he was only a Freshman.

One interception out of 275 attempts; there's gotta be a point where we can't say it's a fluke right? This interception to passing attempt ratio alone sets him apart from Reggie. Reggie gave us some spectacular wins and he also gave us some heartbreaking losses; however, his interceptions were his Achilles' heel.

If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure that RW had a knee injury or something that prevented him from playing 100% in the first half of the season.

We had an NFL coach running a pro-style offense with a mediocre offensive line (and mediocre or worse OC and OL coach).

I have never understood why it is Reggie's fault that he wasn't a drop back QB or why it is Reggie's fault that the OL couldn't block worth a damn.

Reggie would have been a good college QB under a good college coach--like PJ.
 
I'd like to drum this up again. I took some pretty harsh criticism after I posted this, but I must say, Wilson did not look good last night...

He threw zero interceptions, managed to not run outside of the endzone, remembered which down came after 3rd, and hit his receivers in the hands. Wilson didn't look good, but the rest of his team looked bad.
 
I saw some similarities between Wilson and Ball. One of which was taking sacks instead of throwing the ball away.
 
I can't find the stat line on dropped passes... im sure its sizeable
 
Is there a stat line for takes forever to make a read? Over/under throws a receiver? Runs away from the pocket when he should stay?

He played bad. And played slow.

I agree. He sucked, the receivers sucked, and the play calling was atrocious.

To be fair to Russell Wilson, I will say that the play calling didn't put him in any position to make some good plays. The receivers didn't either. That's not to say that he didn't play bad, because he did. He definitely played subpar. But I would put the majority of the blame on the coaches.

I agree. Lots of his passes were tipped by Carolina defenders b/c he doesn't have the zip on the ball to get them there. The dropped pass in the endzone hit the player in the shoulder pads but it took so long to get there that 2 defenders had gotten there already and distracted the receiver enough.
As far as similarity to Reggie I would say that maybe he will peak as a freshman and regress every yer after that. Kinda hard to improve on a 17/1 TD/INT ratio.

I agree, that offensive coordinator seems to have inherited some of Nix's stink now the he finally left the conference. I especially love the playcalling when they were at their own 4 yard line:

1st and 10
Run up the middle, 1-2 yard gain
2nd and 8
Pass that is called back do to ineligible receiver downfield
2nd and 12
Run off-tackle, 1 yard gain
3rd and 11
Run outside, 3 yard gain

Who in their right mind runs on 3rd and 11 from your own 3 yard line!!!
 
Anyone remember what Reggie's 40 time was?

Is Russell supposed to be a "dual-threat" QB? Not only did Tom O'Brien overplay the "Let's roll Russell out of the pocket" card, Russell was slow as molasses.

I think Wilson is actually faster, he's just afraid of running full speed at someone cause he's been injured a couple times doing that.

Fair enough.. I hope he does play better than that though.. I like NC State alright. I always want them to beat FSU.

Remember how the sports media used to always compare Reggie Ball to Chris Leak? The two true frosh QBs that had their campuses all abuzz?

But seriously, I always liked Reggie because he fought like hell and wanted to win and wouldn't back down etc. I think he could have been a special player if he had had a special QB coach. Well I guess that's already true, but I meant special in the good sense...

Anyone who has already given up on the play by 2nd down, and just wants to 'punt it safely'....basically people with no fight, or courage to go after it.

You guys are crazy, or you completely missed last year. The whole State team played like crap, including Wilson, but he can play. I've mentioned it in several places but the State coaches have been preaching to him about staying in the pocket longer and being careful when he runs. Well guess what? He did both and it doesn't work. My prediction is he will get back to playing like he did last year and will be just fine.
