Is this helmet for real?

Believe that the general theory is "safer helmets" are what has caused the increase in injuries over the years with players thinking their safer so putting themselves (and others) in more compromising positions.
Yup... so why wear them in practice?
 
Mark Kelso who played with the Bills in the late 80's and Early 90's wore a padded helmet.

I would guess the larger volume of the padding makes impact more common
 
I think it's required by some teams after a player has a concussion, as there is a period of time when you are at significantly higher risk for another concussion. I saw a number of players wearing them on the field during games last year.
