Is this the future of college football? I'm sure the SEC hopes it is

Unfortunately television moguls do, and money is all that counts to them .... and the SEC and Big Ten

The SEC is riding high right now. But, I think they are overplaying their hand. At some point, they will have to choose between being part of college football or just a minor league developing pro players. They might not need us in their world, but they may be shocked to find out we don't need them in our world, either. My long time regret that we got out of the SEC is giving way to a feeling of "to Hell with them."

I agree with all you said.

If you don’t think they’ll have teams lining up to play them then you are crazy. The alliance has already shown they have schools who will schedule them.
Not if the conference forbids it. If they pull out of the NCAA, I doubt any conference would allow teams that luxury.

Once again Dodd's decision will come back to haunt us and leave us out in the cold, if this ever comes to pass.

The SEC needs to split off. They are nothing but a minor league NFL. There is nothing college about most of those teams. They cheat. They pay players. There is nothing academic about those schools and it comes to football.

SEC football who end up being a boring regional sport just like NASCAR.

Dodd’s decision was correct. He understood that the SEC values football more than education and college. And Georgia Tech would never embrace that shallow mindset. I have zero respect for The SEC.

So you really believe that the worthless leaders of these conferences will have any sway telling teams they can‘t make millions by playing big time teams on national TV in prime time? You think schools will pass on millions in order to make way less? Let them kick them out then. There will be no teams left in their conference to govern. I can see it already, hey Penn State you are forbidden in playing Texas in a dome on Labor Day on ABC at 8pm. Instead we order you to play Wake Forest in our alliance game of the week on ESPNU at 11:30am.

The SEC breaking off and BIG10 chasing them seems logical right now. The move will be heavily influenced by the solvency of these mega-TV deals and NIL monies. College athletics will essentially be pro sports…if they’re not already.

That said…I hate it. I miss when conferences were regional and rivalries mattered. Getting an education mattered, not just monetizing athletic ability as soon as possible. School presidents and ADs are to blame for prostituting “amateur” athletics. Cat is out of the bag and not sure there is anything we can do about it.

I agree with this but this post is 30-40 years too late. I don’t know your age, but in my 52 years I’ve seen pro teams just about every season. And Herschel was bought 42 years ago and SMU bought an entire team in the 80’s as did Schnellenberger and Switzer. My point is I‘m glad many fans are FINALLY waking up to what has been happening for decades.

I’m late 40s and life long Tech man. I recall the historic shenanigans of the factories. It just seems so much more overt, pronounced and accepted today….more systematic. The NCAA at least gave lip service to academics, even when the likes of Switzer, Dooley, Jimmy Johnson, multiple Bama coaches, etc. did their very best to circumvent them. Their inaction on UNC’s cheating scandal was indefensible.

That said, I’m happy to fire up the delorean and go preach to the masses of what is to come!

What does Vandy say in all of this? They probably just enjoy cashing the check
Yeah, Vandy very obviously enjoys being the token private school for the conference's bookkeeping purposes and then depositing fat checks in return for their FCS football team. They DGAF about what the riffraff is doing.

That article is just something to write about. I don't think the author has much influence on what the SEC does. However, I wish they would go out on their own. Say good-by to perfect seasons Alabama and Georgia.

I hear you. I just don’t see it being any more overt, pronounced, or accepted today. It’s always been overt and accepted. Any NCAA investigator could see Herschel’s car or the “U”’s cars. Everyone knew about it then, it’s just that the masses of fans never got worked up about it like they are today. Why? I don’t know. I’ve been upset about it since I was a kid and knew why my team didn’t have a fair chance. The only thing that has really changed is more people now see it. It’s like the hookers are now on Main Street instead of a road a block over. The cops knew about the back road just like they know about Main St. The people knew about it on the back road but now that it’s on Main Street they seemed shocked. I find it funny. GT fans are upset we lost Gibbs. I’m not. I’m more upset about the dozens of other stud RB’s that would have come to GT over the past 40 years if it wasn’t for the blatant paying. I’m po’d that any high level QB that wanted to stay home and play QB for GT was convinced by money to go elsewhere (insert the dozens of stud QB’s the last 40 years from the Atlanta metro area). It’s easy to be upset about Gibbs because we saw him play for us. But what if we get a Trevor Lawrence if the NCAA didn’t let their system go to garbage 50 years ago. That’s what really makes me mad. It’s the what could have beens under a fair system.
