790
The early years of 790 saw the station as a top 40 radio station --not a sports talk station. CNN (680 The Fan) was the genesis of sports talk in Atlanta (unless you want to consider Beau Bock's sports talk tv show on ch. 69, where he would take calls from fans at the end of each show).
In the early 90's, Bock left 680 and started up sports talk on 790, calling it 'The Jock'. The station is privately owned and air time had to be paid for. Beau provided an alternative to 680 but financially he couldn't make a run at it, so the sports talk format on 790 went dark for a spell.
Randy Blake, who along with AJ Cannon and Harmon Wages was on mornings at 680, reignited sports talk on 790 --again buying air time from the privately owned station. After CNN cleaned house, firing Steak, AJ, etal after their morning show one day, and kept Terrence Moore and Herb White off of the air that afternoon, Steak and AJ and others eventually ended up at 790, while Randy Blake was still in control of the affairs of the sports talk format.
Eventually Blake's time expired and he was fazed out, with Steak taking over with financing from Big League Broadcasting --still under time share status. I'm not certain if that has changed or not, but JWE37 is correct about some of 1gtfan's facts. For one, Max Howell was never on 790.
