Jagodzinski: Fired from BC?

Well that information definitely puts a different light on the situation. If he agreed not to interview with any NFL teams for a period of three years and does so then he deserves to have his current job threatened. I don't think the Jets are wrong for calling him as it is Jags's responsibility to politely say "Thank you for calling but I am happy in my current position and am not able to pursue an opportunity to be your head coach."

Well, some/most of what I posted is just "strong rumors" so I definitely won't claim it as gospel. But yeah, the Jets certainly aren't the ones at fault.

It doesn't sound like this is true (having a specific clause about not interviewing with NFL teams), but his problem appears to be that he lied to the AD about being contacted by the Jets.

Wanting to leave after just 2 seasons is kinda classless imho. Not quite Petrino classless, but you should commit to a program no matter what level for at least the length of your first contract. You should be able to interview for better jobs, if you handle it carefully, otherwise it be hard to move up, but if everyone left their job after 2 years there would be no continuity and it'd be chaos.

BC should take the "high road" and just allow the interview. They are coming off as backwards in media.

The Sun reported today that Jags promised to stay for more than two years when he got the job. I'd be pissed if I was the BC AD also.

Right, "agreement" rather than "clause" seems like the word I should have used. I'm also reading stuff that says Jags doesn't like recruiting, and is "not sure if he's a college guy." If true, I wonder how involved he was in recruiting when he was a coordinator there. Wonder if this is just a recent discovery.

Handled it well? I think he was open and honest about it. But it hosed us somewhat and strung us our for a few weeks while they made up their mind. I was a FOC until then.

Well, I should handled it as well as possible. At least that's how it looked to me, unless some insiders know otherwise. It wasn't his fault the Dolphins dragged it out for as long as they did.

Also, he had one of the best recruiting classes in Tech history that year. It's hard to the interviewing process hurt Tech at all.

If I were the BC AD I would sit down with Jags and give him "limited permission" to talk to the Jets. What I mean by that is I'd tell him he can talk to the Jets but BC needs a decision, one way or the other, within X days from the time he interviews. I think that would be reasonable because if it drags out then it could indeed hurt recruiting and that's not fair to BC. It's one thing to be interested in another job, it is quite another to do something that hurts your current employer WHILE searching for that job, whether it is inadvertent or not.

Doesn't matter, he could come back 4 days later with his 'decision'. Call a presser to talk about West Virginia and how he loves it and how it's where he always wanted to be and that Alabama isn't home. Then they could give him a 7 year deal worth enough money to put food on the tables of every starving child in the 3rd most impovershed state in the union. He could still get up and walk for another job in less then a year.

well, if the CFO didnt meet with the key people and advise them of what was going on, he might be fired.

this is apparently the issue, as i read it

Yeah, I understand BC's actions more now. A career can survive mistakes, but not ethical lapses. If he made an agreement in kind to stay at BC for three years, he should hold that up. The Petrino types all eventually go down in flames.

My sympathies lie with Boston College on this one. Losing a HC after only 2 or 3 years in the job and right in the middle of an employment contract is bad for the school (but very good at least in the short term for the individual). Why is turnover so high, especially with penalty clauses included in contract? Because market compensation has risen so dramatically that the cost of leaving is more than covered by the new employment contract.
BC is moving in the right direction with specific contract language that limits interviewing while under a current contract. I hope they stick to their guns, if not for BC for the rest of us that wish to see our contracts honored.
Wonder if CPJ’s new contract carries restrictions on interviewing?

What I meant though was that:

1) If he doesn't give them a decision within the set period of time they fire him

2) If he does give them a decision within the set period of time and then later is seen to be still talking with the Jets then they fire him

Of course you can't prevent him from going back on his word but at least you can do the best you can to contain the problem AND look like you're the good guys instead of Jags being a sympathetic figure :)

think about it like this... if you went to interview at another company, would you want to instantly be fired for that? it's the same thing... it's his job and they're his employerer...

I wouldn't work for a company that had that attitude. However, if I did not do everything above board I'd deserve my fate.
