Remember Joe? I believe he redshirted his first year, got lots of spring and fall practice and then started his redshirt freshman year where he was just okay. Things didn't really click for Joe until midway through his Sophomore season.

Meanwhile Sims had a Covid year, 9 games, one real Spring....give it some time.

And Congrats to young Mr. Yates for his fine game. Both are still very young.

Carquest Bowl with Joe at the helm was a fun time. And the WV fans didn't even poop in the band section that time.

It's way too early to give up on Sims. He needs to start the rest of this year, take his lumps, but hopefully learn enough to have a productive rest of his career. I'd be more comfortable betting on Sims' future with a QB coach and OC that could use his talents better, but it is what it is.

so you're saying wait till next year

In reality, Sims had a really bad quarter. The injury prevented him from being able to bounce back.

I’m sure Joe, Goose, Nesbitt, Jones, JT all had really bad quarters at some point as well.
Well Goose against FSU In 98 after Hamilton was injured was not good
But Goose was a different kind of player anyway
And I was so wrong about him!

I think if Sims doesn't get hurt, stays in the game and settles down, we win that game....

So our HC is like Nick Saban, our QB is like Joe Hamilton, and I guess that makes our OC like Ralph Friedgen. :drink2::puke::crazy2:

First year stats for comparison....Hamilton had the same number of INTs in ~70 fewer attempts....

Joe Hamilton 1996....
Passing = 1342 yds on 57.4% 108/188, 7 TDs, 13 INTs
Rushing = 248 yds on 95 rushes, 3 TDs

Jeff Sims 2020
Passing = 1881 yds on 54.9% 141/257, 13 TDs, 13 INTs
Rushing = 492 yds on 120 rushes, 6 TDs

Apples and Oranges as it pertains to coaching staff. Yates balled out, wish his coaches could do that.

More like CPJ taking a game away from CGO'L

By getting outgained by 70 yards and putting up a whopping 380 yards of offense on sub 4 ypc?

unless Paul Johnson ran back that pick six and made another interception inside the 20 he had very little to do with who won.

Hamilton blew that game but such things happen to redshirt Freshmen.

I don't think there's any reason to give up on Sims, even at qb. But what message does it send if you keep your starter in who struggled while benching the backup who dramatically outperformed him? Either competition is king or it isn't. Unless sims crushes Yates in practice, the starting spot this week should be Yates' to lose.
