Joe Hamilton's First 2 seasons

I don't think there's any reason to give up on Sims, even at qb. But what message does it send if you keep your starter in who struggled while benching the backup who dramatically outperformed him? Either competition is king or it isn't. Unless sims crushes Yates in practice, the starting spot this week should be Yates' to lose.
You’d be sending a message that how he’s performed in the 15 months since he arrived is more important than how he performed for 1 quarter last Saturday

By getting outgained by 70 yards and putting up a whopping 380 yards of offense on sub 4 ypc?

unless Paul Johnson ran back that pick six and made another interception inside the 20 he had very little to do with who won.

Hamilton blew that game but such things happen to redshirt Freshmen.

No by scoring 36 points to GT's 26.

So you would bench Yates for ballin' out and putting GT in position to win??

You are over stating how much he “balled out”. He managed the game well against a really bad team, but has visible physical limitations to his game. There is a reason he was 4th string when we broke camp the last two years. And a reason the staff has ridden Sims since his first day, he’s physical skills give him a very high ceiling.

well let me see 36-6(7) = 30(29) which is still greater than 26 using the old math, maybe with common core it is different. :dunno:

Not if we kick the gimme field goal instead of throwing a pick at the 12. Or if Hamilton doesn’t throw a pick at the Navy 46. If you outgain the opposition by 80 yards and lose the game it’s not because of some wizardry by the opposing OC.

First year stats for comparison....Hamilton had the same number of INTs in ~70 fewer attempts....

Joe Hamilton 1996....
Passing = 1342 yds on 57.4% 108/188, 7 TDs, 13 INTs
Rushing = 248 yds on 95 rushes, 3 TDs

Jeff Sims 2020
Passing = 1881 yds on 54.9% 141/257, 13 TDs, 13 INTs
Rushing = 492 yds on 120 rushes, 6 TDs
Nobody else is gonna acknowledge this? I was too young to remember Hamilton as a freshman very well, but even with an elite OC he put up some pretty awful numbers. Even if he never approaches Joe Hamilton level, he still has lots of room to improve and time to do it.

Hamilton basically had one receiver that year. Steagall was out for the year. Middleton was a one man show.

Middleton was better than any one receiver we have now but the WR group was better in 2020/1 than in 1996.

I had completely forgotten about this game but we shut down the option pretty well but Paul had one of his better passing days —10-15 for 202 yards. Wish we saw more of that during his time here.

Wow, this is your argument in the thread that literally has Joe Hamilton in the title.

Pat Watson was the OC, I don't remember him being a train wreck; but there was a reason he was replaced the following season. Friedgen was still with the Chargers that year.

As I've mentioned before, some guys are gamers in practice, but stink it up on the big stage, whereas others are gamers when the lights come on.

Ah, didn’t realize that. Makes a lot more sense.

Yup. The one who is best today plays. Not simply the one who was best last year.

JoHam never had a game like Sims did against Syracuse.
I'd say the 13-10 loss to Maryland (who fired their coach at the end of the year) in the game before Navy is very comparable. Joe had 3 picks in that game and 2 of them were in the last 2 minutes.

So, I'm not a Patenaude homer but what exaxtly did he do bad in the game last week?
I'm thinking more in terms of QB development. I think it's obvious Sims has good arm talent and really good rushing ability. But Sims seems to want bail too early and run when receivers haven't had a chance to get into their route, or he wants to force a ball into coverage when he should've pulled it down and run. Basically, just decision making. And that comes with time, which is why I think we need to be more patient with Sims. But I also think it comes from coaching, which Patenaude is responsible for.
