Joe steps down

Regardless of how much time passes, I don't think Joe nor GOL will ever be back at Tech. Too much baggage associated with both of them to justify bringing them back. Improper actions have consequences.

Just a question here please do not blast me for it, but was Joe one of the "Flunkgate" athletes who was ineligible, but played anyway?

Regardless, it is sad to see him go as I was excited to see what he could do with our QBs and in recruiting. Also all GT fans should be grateful for him as he gave us many many good memories during the late 90's.

Joe was my all-time favorite GT football player. However, most people who get a DUI are not driving under the unfluence for the first time.

When I was 17, my Father and I came upon a drunk driving head-on collision when in New Orleans. First upon the scene, we found a dead Mother and two dead children in the backseat. The impact was so devastating, that the front seat had been rammed into one child's face so hard that it pushed the skin off of the face revealing the skeleton. I have never forgotten that or the meat that was stuck to the steering wheel column.

Drunk drivers, I do not care who they are, are pieces of sh*t.

ANYBODY can choose not to drink. There are Judges, Lawyers, Doctors, and etc. who are alcoholics who choose not to drink.

Even if lil joe is not an alcoholic he could stop drinking get some treatment and attend meetings and he could get his life back.

I think if my job depended on it I could quit drinking forever.

Most people who drink also drive at least occasionally. Statistically it may take 50x's driving drunk to get 1 DUI. It may not be that high but it is at least 10x to 1.

I will tell you that if someone gets hurt and you are drinking then there is a good chance you will be going to prison.

I hate defending DUI cases in court.

Well this post proves my theory that you are a worthless lawyer.

This post proves my theory that the standards for proving theories has gone way down in the past few years.

So what you're saying is that you knew all along that lawbee was a worthless lawyer?

Well this proves my theory that the average Stingtalker is smarter than the average bear.

I never said I haven't made a bad choice, I'm just smart enough not to drink and drive....with weed....around a college campus....after I just got hired for a great job. As for you doubting me, I couldn't care less.
So when you were in college you never drove after drinking? If so, I'd say you are one of the tiny percentage of college students, particularly at Tech. No excuse, and it was extremely stupid, but there it is. What I doubt about you is that you know anything about Joe's situation, and should be careful to draw conclusions from long distance. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet I'm right.

That wasn't Flunkgate. Flunkgate was a Chan thing, where players actually did fail out.

Joe was indeed one of the players deemed inelligible by the NCAA later, but the reason was because he didn't have enough credit hours, because THE HILL told him (and others) they didn't need to take that many hours. He and others easily could have registered for enough credit hours to avoid the problem, but some Bean Counter in Tech Tower failed in their job to understand the rules properly. No surprise, really. That whole building is full of nincompoops.

I've driven drunk .. and I mean truly drunk not "had 2 glasses of wine with dinner," ... three times ever. Each out of some sort of impromptu necessity I did not foresee.

The worst I've ever been, my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I were sitting at home getting ripped, had no intention of leaving the house, and got a call from some dude we didn't know in Buckhead, who'd found my wife's sister so totally plowed she couldn't stand up straight and was puking in the gutter. Bad place to be if you're an attractive female in a short skirt. So he told us where he'd wait for us with her sister, and we brewed a thermos of coffee and drove into the "Gaping Jaws Of DUI Death" to pick her up and bring her back. I used the cruise control, drove between the lines, and had my wife check all lanes, navigate, and keep an eye out for cops.

God willing I never have to do anything like that again.

Please do note I didn't have an open container, nor a bag of weed, in the car with me.

I agree with what you're saying, but here's the thing: people are going to draw their own conclusions anyway, its human nature. Its just that now in the age of message boards, they can make their judgements public without recourse thanks to anonymity. Many of the opinions expressed here, or any board for that matter, would never be made face to face around a water cooler.

Many of us don't have the self control to restrain ourselves in this world of cute nicknames and words without consequences. This is the other edge to the sword of the unmoderated board.

I get it, and I don't have a problem with people voicing concerns or saying that Joe should step down (I agreed with his decision and that it was the only logical course of action). I also understand comments about it being stupid, etc. What bothers me are those who have concluded that he has specific problems and needs rehab, etc., from one instance, who feel that there's nothing wrong with spouting off on message boards. Personally I think it says far more about the person posting than the person they are posting about.

I'm not going to pass judgment on Joe because I've driven drunk before. There's no telling why he did it ... maybe he had to pick up his drunk ass sister in law from a club before some idiot guys got the bright idea to rape her, and didn't originally plan on driving.

I'm just saying if I was forced into a situation like that (as I have been before) I wouldn't bring weed and more booze with me.

It's a real shame. I really looked forward to seeing Joe on the sidelines this year, and I think his insight to our QBs would have been very valuable.

One of the unfortunate decisions I made years ago was not to go to college. I'm probably one of the very few fans who just sort of chose GT to be my team. Do I know about Joe's situation? No. Neither do you and probably 90% of everyone else on this board. Like dressedcheeseside said, everyone is going to draw their own conclusions.

I get that, I'm just saying we ought to all remember we've done stupid things ourselves and just let it lay. He will get past this or he won't, but he will always be JoeHam and have a special place in Tech history. No need to demonize him or anything.

Oh, and kudos to you for having the good sense to pick Tech to follow. It shows true class and outstanding intellect. Whether you went to Tech or not, you sir are truly a jolly good fellow.

I understand what you guys say about not knowing what his circumstances were, but Joe didn't have a thermos full of coffee...he had an open alcoholic drink. He wasn't going to pick someone important up because they were in trouble...he had marijuana in his ash tray. I'm just not sure what situation could surround these circumstances that would make it in any way forgivable. Not saying he should be locked up for life or anything, but I certainly would not want him back with Tech for a long, long time.

You 're right, we've all done stupid things. The only difference is Joe got caught. I really wish we could've seen him mentoring the new QB's though.

I was watching a basketball game between NCSU and GT with my mother and became fascinated with the Yellow Jackets. I couldn't have been anymore than 9 or 10 years old. Ever since then, I've been a HUGE Tech fan. My Jeep has Tech on it front and back, I have Buzz tattooed on my arm, and half my wardrobe is Georgia Tech clothing.

You have Buzz tattooed on your arm?! You, my friend, are a true fan!!

I don't understand. Has anyone disagreed with anything you wrote? The point some are trying to make is we need to leave it at that. Those who are spouting off about Joe's "condition" and what he needs to do have no clue of his situation. The only thing that really matters now is that he can't work here, he needs our support in whatever he does next, and maybe, someday, he can get back to Tech if that's what he wants.

but Joe didn't have a thermos full of coffee...he had an open alcoholic drink.

the article i read said he had an empty beer bottle in the back seat, not a bottle with beer in it. have you ever had an empty can or bottle of beer in your backseat floorboard? i guess that is legally an open container. after various interactions with the police, i dont trust a word that they write on a police report. they are often like a fantasy novel compared to what actually happened.
