Johnson...

I'm bumping this because it's becoming apparent that Johnson's the man.

Some don't like him because of his offense. I say, let's see what he does when he has true D1 talent to work with.

I support GT and whoever is our coach.
If PJ is The man Long Live THE MAN.

and true D1 talent to work against!

Navy played ND and Army this year too. They 2-0 and scored 46 and 38. We had the same record as Navy against those opponents and scored less points.

The triple option run by Navy works. It would work better with our talent.

Edit: Sorry I confused Wake and BC on Navy's schedule.

The concern is our talent would dwindle if he runs the same offense that he uses at Navy. High school offensive skill players with any aspirations know they can't play in the system (as it exists at Navy) and make it to the next level.

One of the worst strengths of schedule in the country (so yes, I think I know why the TO works there) and he lost to Deleware (AA) and Ball St. I beleive.

I'm on board if it is him, BUT if he runs the TO, I'm going to be very skeptical, especially if its out of his Flex Bone, which is a glorified version of the Wing-T (a HS offense). Good luck recruiting talented players to run that offense.

Broken record much?

I don't expect to see the flexbone. I think we will see the option out of the I-formation with 2 WR. I agree that we will not recuit (and will lose) our pro style QBs. We will continue to pull in smaller, quicker offensive linemen.

Delaware is in the final four this weekend of Div 1AA and is 10-3 with all three losses being under a touchdown. They beat Navy by 5 IIRC in a shootout.

Navy couldn't beat bad Div 1AA teams before PJ got there much less great teams. I for one have no confidence that we would've gone undefeated against GA Southern back in Erks day. I'm doubtful that UGA would've. The difference between the divisions is less now than it was then. And even in the darkest days of GT Football we had more raw athletic talent than Navy has.

That's a rambling response, but I hope you can get over that and look at the upside.

I am all for Johnson, he has proven he can succeed and he has recruiting experience in the south. Option type offenses have been used by teams like Florida-2006 and Texas-2005 with great success, and they haven't had trouble recruiting good QB's either. But I think that probably needs its own thread (when he is hired.)

No doubt this is the biggest concern. The major offset is that getting away from the drop back passing offense eliminates the need to have a good drop back passer. I don't care how good the rest of the team is, it is hard to win with a conventional offense without a good drop back passer.

The scariest thing now that we are close enough to start speculating, is that we have excellent offensive personnel for this package. We have been recruiting athletic OLmen for years. We have nearly an embarrassment of riches at running back and if anyone should love this hire it is them. Finally Nesbitt should be perfect to start, although we need to recruit a backup or three pronto.

Ooooh...and our WRs are very good at blocking. They'll be thrilled.

;)

So I guess Renfree and Little aught to look elsewhere?

so johnson experts, do we have to buy rest of his contract from the Navy? How much is that?
