Here we go, April 14, 2008 Lunch Bunch:

Question about redshirting: Coach says in four years he would love to redshirt every freshman because that means he has depth. He said that 22 year old players almost always out perform 18 year olds. For now, he's going to play the best players no matter what class they are, but he is not going to burn a redshirt for someone to play on special teams. He said they have plenty of guys who can fill that role. He said in four years we're going to wish we had redshirted Nesbitt, because he is going to get better and better in this offense. He will play freshmen who make the 2-deep only if you have to have them.

The only reason to not RS someone is lack of depth at a position or if the player might leave early (hard to predict).

Or if that true freshman is somehow able to be better than the current starter. Like has been said many times, the only place where that is likely to happen is Hill at wide receiver, because of the oft discussed skill Hill has and the lack of a proven wide receiver outside Thomas.

To back this up with more than the opinion of Hill, I'd like to point out that there are more catches among Dwyer, Jones and Cox than there are among all other players who caught a ball not named D Thomas.

idaman54, he said it last year before the season IIRC. I'll try to track it down. He made a comment about how alot of burning RS for special teams has gone on in the past here and he doesn't like to do it. I don't really understand your point. If you're saying you'd like to have a player play ST 1 season before playing O or D, Redshirting just delays that by 1 season. We have plenty of people this year who are 2nd stringers who can contribute on ST, we shouldn't needTru
e Freshmen. Last year, playing so many Freshmen and RS Freshmen, is not ideal. The only reason to not RS

Obviously you haven't looked at the depth chart. It's a numbers game. Very few offensive guys play special teams leaving coaches to choose strictly from the defense and the offensive players that do play ST (Roddy Jones, Marcus Wright and maybe two others) only return punts/kickoffs. You not going to play your starters on all of the special teams which a lot of them did last year. Also because you are labeled 2nd string doesn't mean you the next best option. I know it sound crazy but if you got somebody like JB on your team who can run and can make plays you are going to play him asap. The object is to maximize your talent not to predict what someone is going do as a 5th year
Senior because that is not guaranteed

Marcus Wright recovered the fumbled KR vs U[sic]GA. That means he was on the Kickoff Coverage team. I'm just giving you Coach's philosophy and I happen to agree with it. Sure there will be exceptions. You obviously think highly of JB, that's great, but it's asking alot of a True Freshman to come in and adjust to CFB right away. We have alot of other very talented players already on the team who have now been through 2 Springs of workouts and a full Fall as a college football player. Plus RS will probably mean the difference between JB starting for 2 years or 3 years, think about it.

This is true, WR is a position where this can happen from time to time. It's far less common at the other positions.
