Not taking sides either way and this is my first post on the subject but here's my take on the coaching situation:

First, you do not build a consistent program by changing coaches (for whatever reason) every 3 to 4 years.

Secondly, contrary to a lot of opinions, we cannot get a top name coach who will stay with us long term if he has great success.

Thirdly, I think of Frank Beamer's success at VT. His first 6 year records, starting in 1987, were 2-9, 3-8,
6-4-1, 6-5, 5-6 and 2-8-1.

Now I can only hope we have the same future success under CG that VT has had with FB, but I just do not see how we can start over at this point. It seems wise to me to ride it out for anohter year or two to see what direction we are going. Just my thoughts.

yes, but GT was not in the same shape that VT was when Beamer came in...O'Leary had put GT in five straight bowl games before Chan came.

That is possibly true but Gailey, as of yet, has not reverted from two 6 win seasons back to 2-8-1. I am not arguing either way...just trying to find hope.

In the 6 years before Beamer started, VPI went 8-4, 7-4, 7-4, 9-2, 8-4, 6-5, and 9-2-1.

The excuse usually made for Beamer is that VPI went on probation due to the crooked dealings of Vince Dooley's brother. But then again, Chan has had scholarship reductions and flunkgate that I would think are a similar excuse.

my bad, thought VT was a bit weaker in the pre-beamer years, but do remember the probation problems they had.

would agree that there aren't alot of examples of a coach breaking through after 4 years. About the only other one I could possibly think of was Mack Brown when he was at UNC. I think his first four years UNC was 1-10, 1-10, 6-4-1 (won't forget that tie), 7-4. He then went on to win 9+ games in four of the next 6 season.

however, as you notice the trend with Brown's teams were that they were steadily improving over those first four years.

For $2 million a year GT could get a dang fine coach (b/c I'm pretty sure they know they will have to throw cash out on the table to get a good one). Stop bashing GT to defend Chan. Its a tough but good place to coach.

Why this fascination with a top name coach? No, we probably wouldn't get a "name" coach if we were in the market today. But so what? Hewitt wasn't a name coach either. It's an AD's job to figure out who the next hot coach will be and get him before everyone else is after him. There's plenty of coaches who would take the GT job. There's plenty of coaches who would take ANY job. Just because we don't know who they are doesn't mean they can't coach.

Why take the chance of another b*** l****?
Why accept mediocrity and go after a no name coach?
If Gailey isn't around, then I want a big name coach. If we get another coach with NO head coaching experience then we start ALL OVER again. Recruiting is killer enough at GT without starting over.
Give me a big name coach or keep the one we got.
I refuse to accept mediocrity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Totally agree, NC. "Name" coaches are usually not the ones you want anyway.

Here are (IMHO) the best coaching hires of the past decade:

Pete Carroll (pro failure retread)
Bob Stoops (first time head coach)
Jim Tressel (I-AA coach)
Larry Coker (first time head coach)
Mark Richt (first time head coach)
Bobby Petrino (first time head coach)
Tommy Tuberville (moderate "name" coach from Ole Miss)

As far as "name" coach hires, I guess Mack Brown is the best recent success story.

I sense cognitive dissonance in you GTDean. You refuse to accept mediocrity and you want to keep Chan Gailey? Chan Gailey is the king of mediocrity to date.

Until he has a losing record, he ain't going anywhere. Sorry to poop on your parade though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

GT is in a constant rebuilding mode there has never been a reload year on the Flats. We have more depth now than we've had in a long time on both the OL and DL.
Contrary to popular belief We were not loaded with talent when GOL left.

That's not true. And it isn't a parade. He will only stick around at 6-5 if he makes substantial changes and/or we can't afford the buyout and increased salary a new coach would take.

Is 6-5 an improvement? No. Is the Tech standard for a program to be consistently T25? Yes.

You act like Gailey was a big name coach. And BTW, I've never said anything about a coach with no HC experience. I'm talking about a coach from a lower level who is ready for the big time.

Besides, I'm not advocating getting rid of Gailey. I'm saying if the decision is made to not extend we need to move now to replace him. If Braine and Clough decide to extend that's fine, I just hope they give him a chance to succeed.

We don't, and never have, changed coaches every 3 to 4 years.

3 of our last 4 coaches changed on us. Big difference.

No.. Really? Either way it WAS a coaching change.

You honestly don't see the difference in FIRING a coach every 3 to 4 years, and a coach turncoating every 3 to 4 years?

That would explain some things.

I think that chan can get us there but for a state of georgia program looking for a head coach i would say that Chris Hatcher from valdosta st is the man. look what he has done down there and look at the qb's he has coached in the past at kentucky. My only question about Hatcher would be him finding a great dc. if we could get Hatcher along with keeping Tenuta i think we could find what we are all looking for!
