on ESPN.360. You know what? We didn't look bad at all up until the fumbled punt at about the 11:00 mark of the second quarter. The D gave them the second TD on those two penalties, but we had them stopped twice. The O looked good on our first two drives, real good on the second one to the 7 yard line before the FG. Jones and Dwyer were gashing for 5-8 ypc. DT missed the TD pass on the first drive, and JN threw behind him open in the EZ on te\he second drive. The first 20 minutes was a good game.

The whole thing fell apart after the punt return. 21-3. Faked punt failed. 28-3. Game over. Our O is completely taken out of the game, and we're history. One 8 minute stretch of sorry, sorry ST's.

I don't post this to rehash the game. I post this to encourage all us about the offense. If we don't make the stupid penalties and get the sorry ST play, that game is dead even. The 2nd half was just a defensive struggle.

Now I'm pumped again for NSD and spring practice.

I feel bad for Andrew Smith. First the Maryland game in 07' and then his last game in 08'.

2 devastating muffed punts resulting in TD's for the opposition.

I was ripped for stating how valuable Tyler Evans was to our football team. I hope all of you naysayers (aka those who said "we need a serious TD threat PR") kiss my cyber-posting ass.

Tyler Evans was always good for a solid catch, and 5 yards. Never fumbled.

I for one can't wait for him to be back.

Our O never got going...our D sure fell apart after the muffed punt, but our O never really got going. Hopefully we use that game a springboard into next year. We add a few recruits and install the full offense and we should NEVER see that kind of performance again.

Tyler Evans yes... Tyler Melton no. We were riddled with dropped/bobbled punts this past year.. we may not have lost them all but it seemed to have happened almost every game. Its pretty much automatic points and a confidence boost for an offense whose drive should have been over with and a crusher for a D that should have been off the field. Its like that stat in the NC game last night 92% of games when ST blocks a punt they win.. I bet its a similar percentage with punt teams recovering a muffed punt

Not that it matters, but it was UVa in '07. And it wasn't Andrew's fault. There is a super natural phenomenon that doesn't allow us to win in Charlottesville.

Yeah, it's called a mental block, we need to get over that soon.

If you can, go watch the replay on ESPN.360. Yes, LSU slowed us down a bit, but the O didn't look at all bad up until the ST fiascoes. It wasn't the Miami game, but both Jones and Dwyer ripped off some nice 8-12 yard runs on the toss. We weren't doing much up the middle, but the toss was open. We also missed on some wide open passes. The problem was we didn't punch it in on those two drives in the 1st quarter. We do that, and it's a much different game.

I was surprised watching it last night, after my frustration had worn off, how decent we looked in the first 20 minutes of the game. I'd encourage all who can to catch the replay.

BTW, did anyone watch ESPN at halftime last night? Mark May made an interesting comment regarding high potent offenses and the layoff -- all the teams with high potent offenses (he mentioned OU, TT, Texas, Missouri) all of them had rust, which may have been due to the long layoff. He did not mention us in this, but when he said it, I thought of our offense could apply as well.

Agreed 100%.

For me, the whole thing fell apart when we tried to fake the punt. Our defense had shown that it *could* hold LSU given reasonable field position, but we gave them the game when we attempted the fake punt. Paul Johnson gave them the game, because he didn't trust Womack. That's it, pure and simple.

I blame Paul.

I still think he's great coach, though, and I'm glad we've got him around. I just hope he does less stupid stuff next year on 4th down.

Stinger, I was going to post the same thing today. I watched only up until the fumbled punt last night, and you're right, we moved the ball well. Really, it was the 2nd drive, which was like a 13 play drive for a FG, where we also converted a 1st and 25 after the chop block.

Even when we were down 14 to 3, I was watching the O on the sideline and the O-line was pumping each other up jumping around a bit as they were getting ready to come back on the field after the punt, and I told my wife "we're going to march right here". I really think we'd have made it 14-10, and it would've been a completely different game. But, the fumble happens, and 2 TD'ers later...game is over.
