timing aside, don't care what anyone says, but we'd better be planning to do whatever it takes to asure that cpj stays at g.t.

who would want to hire him and run a gimic offense that would hurt recruiting?;)

Wait, we hired someone who runs an antiquated, high-school offense? One that will never work in D1 football? Son of a bitch! How come no one told me?!

Yep, he was hired, knowing good and well that his high school offense wont work against sec speed.

I actually think GT is a pinnacle job for a guy in CPJ's situation. Most of the jobs that would be considered "better" than GT are at schools that would never consider running the triple option.

I think Nebraska is the only team we could have to worry about.

I don't think he's going anywhere for a "better job/school". Maybe for more money, but not for another school. As long as we are competitive in salary he won't go anywhere.

I agree completely. But you should remember, he already got a substantial raise last December after the win over UGA. He went from $1.6 million to $2.45 million a year. I think Beamer and Bowden are the only two higher paid coaches in the ACC.

Even before Georgia Tech approached coach Paul Johnson about renegotiating his contract only a year into the deal, he said he was happy at his job.

A 53 percent raise should remove any doubt.

Georgia Tech dug deep into its wallet to apparently make Johnson the highest-paid coach in the ACC. A year after he signed a seven-year contract worth about $1.6 million annually, Johnson received a new deal that was made official Thursday. It added another year and increased his pay to an annual average of about $2.45 million.

Said Johnson, “I’m very appreciative to [athletics director Dan Radakovich] and everybody involved.”

After the Jackets beat Clemson, Florida State, Miami and Georgia on the way to a 9-3 season, Tech has made a statement about its confidence in and commitment to Johnson only a year after arriving from Navy.

Johnson will earn more than Florida State’s Bobby Bowden (33 seasons as head coach, 27 consecutive bowls, 12 ACC titles) and Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer (22 seasons as head coach, three ACC titles, three Big East titles).

Said Radakovich, “In looking at [the athletic association’s budget], one of the ways we can invest money and hopefully get a great return on it is in our football program being led by Paul.”

Market forces were at work. With a young roster and new offensive and defensive schemes being put in place, Tech was picked to finish fourth in the ACC Coastal Division. The Jackets tied for a share of the division title, however, and has a No. 14 BCS ranking, highest among ACC teams. Johnson was named ACC coach of the year.

As a result, Auburn was interested in Johnson before hiring Gene Chizik from Iowa State, according to published reports.

Jack Reale, Johnson’s agent, said that negotiations “went probably quicker than one would normally expect because of the other situations that were out there.”

In the amended contract, Johnson will be required to pay Tech $1 million if he leaves after the first year of the contract, increased from $750,000. The buyout in remaining years was raised from $500,000 to $750,000.

Considering the salary increase, it was not a steep hike. North Carolina coach Butch Davis makes a reported $2.2 million, and his initial buyout is $2 million, for example.

Said Radakovich of the buyout price, “It’s OK for me, it’s OK for our president, it’s OK for Paul.”

The contract doesn’t necessarily mean that ticket prices at Bobby Dodd Stadium will increase in 2009. Athletics department officials have been considering different pricing models for tickets and requisite Tech Fund donations for several months. The total of tickets and donation might actually decrease in certain parts of the stadium but increase in others.
However, Radakovich said, “We’ve got to go out and hustle a little bit and do some things, but that’s part of my job.”

Johnson’s assistants also will receive raises. Radakovich said he believed that the budget for assistant salaries will increase about 10 to 15 percent, from about $1.4 or $1.5 million.

Johnson is a long way from his days at Lees-McRae College in 1981, when he made $100 a week in his first college coaching job. Tech is likewise entering a new era. Radakovich said he had lunch Thursday with Homer Rice, Tech’s longtime AD and a former coach.
Said Radakovich, “I think he said he was going to see if he could get a coaching job.”

He said it in the "GT Football Vault" book that I have that he turned down several jobs while at Navy but when the offer came from GT he chose it due to its history and tradition and it was in Georgia, which he says he feels more at home in. He also said that he hopes to be here for a while and hopes that it's his last job (though that may be just as a "fluffer" to the readers)

I think he'll be here for a long time. The fans like him and are satisfied with what he's doing here, and I don't see us chasing him out, at least not in the next few years.

Don't worry, if something bad happens this weekend idiots will start calling for his head saying that we can never win a championship with PJ. :laugher:

As long as PJ feels that he has a legit shot of winning a national championship at this school he is not going anywhere, as a coach that is all he has ever wanted. His family loves this state and he has many fans here. Money like "Alabama Money" will eventually get thrown his way but I expect him to stay here.

Beamer's salary is 2.1mil. Bowden's is 2.5.

So PJ is the 2nd highest paid coach in the ACC by a margin of an entry level tech salary.

There is absolutely no way we should give Paul Johnson a raise this year short of winning a BCS bowl AND beating Georgia. He already got a raise last year after his first year for not even winning the division. I love the guy, but geez, generally you have to perform before you get money thrown at you, especially a 50% raise from a business in not great financial straits.

I dont think we have to worry about Nebraska. Why you ask? Would you want to live in Nebraska over Atlanta? Neither would I.

I agree. Usually raises are offered when you exceed your previous worth. The only way to do better than last year is to go to an ACC championship.

You never know what a coach is thinking, but I agree that Tech seems a perfect fit for him. Other coaches in his situation might be tempted by the NFL, but I don't think he'd be considered an NFL candidate because of the offense he runs. I think there is a good chance he'll be with us for many years.

i agree with all said, but as the "spread option" or wishbone as the astute mr. davie called this offense gaining popularity, cpj will be sought after. moreover, he just, frankly is a great coach. he'll change whatever it takes to win. unlike richt, cpj's players both fear and respect him and will leave it all on the field. need to keep him. simple as that.

If he wants to leave for money, there's nothing we'll be able to offer to stop him. We simply can't hang with the big boys financially. But like others have said, I a) don't think that he's the type of guy that will abandon a school Saban or Rodriguez-style and b) GT is a perfect fit for him.

Don't underestimate the interest teams will have in installing PJ's system. Urban Meyer's spread was a laughing matter when he came from Utah to Florida, and now 1/3 of the teams in college football are scrambling to get it installed by hiring anyone who ever worked with Meyer.

I would watch out for schools from other conferences, who have used option football in the past, who have money, and who aren't typically top-ranked in recruiting.

Nebraska, Syracuse, Colorado, and maybe Oklahoma or Notre Dame are the teams I can see going after PJ should their current coaches tank. Nebraska is the most likely, IMHO.

this is the one that worries me a bit. high academics. huge tradition. i can see the lure of the challenge of bringing them "back to the top" so to speak

and they gots the dollas!!!

Paul Johnson can't go to Notre Dame because Urban Meyer already has that one sewn up.

So are you just throwing out a generic comment or do you have something to say on the subject? Seriously, the man is making almost $2.5M a year to coach football. Tech's athletic department struggles to break even every year. Just what is it you think we aren't doing or need to do differently? If this is just "I hope our coach doesn't leave" column, why not just say that?
