  • How do you explain away the fact that he failed miserably as our offensive line coach for 4 seasons? To the point where we were blaming him for losses? The undisciplined nature of the OL for 4 seasons?
  • How do you explain that this guy was tagged "Assistant Head Coach" during 4 of the most dog öööö seasons of Tech football in history?
  • How do you explain his absolute dog öööö performance as an OC at UCF? To the point that he had to take a demotion back to OL caoch? They went 0-12, mind you.
  • If he's such a great recruiter and builds such strong bonds with the kids, why did our key players already hit the portal? He couldn't even hang on to them?
I'm just asking...

I'd guess the same reason the defense had such a turn around a 1/3 into this season.
 
I don't give him a pass for the OL being so bad. He has to bear some level of responsibility for that. However, I thought our OL held up better against UGA than it did against Western Carolina, which leads me to believe he has some idea what he's doing in that regard and can fare okay if he's not being hamstrung by the head coach. I can't say for sure, but maybe there was a reason Saban kept him on for several years.

Pretty much everything I've heard about how Collins ran the actual football side of things (as opposed to the marketing/recruiting side) sounds pretty bad, and I can understand getting poor results when you're not practicing and preparing for games with the same intensity as your opponents. That starts at the top, and if it's bad at the top, I'm not sure there's much assistants can do to overcome it.

Can't really speak to his time at UCF. Wasn't there, wasn't watching the games, etc. I'd certainly hope he isn't going to be our OC, though.

As for the portal, that's going to happen when the coaching situation is in flux, and really it's just a reality of college football now. If you aren't losing several players to the portal each year, it's because they have no place else to go.

I’m not thrilled with the hire either, but since GT didn’t ask for my unqualified input I’ll just support Key and reserve any criticism until I see some games next year. There was more improvement in 8 games under Key than the Waffle Clown achieved in 3+ years.
 
Key isn't our OL coach or our OC anymore so I'm not really too concerned about his performance in either role. As a HC, he seems to have inspired the guys to play, made sensible decisions, and won a bunch of games we were 100% going to lose under Collins. That's all he's gotta do, and let his coordinators coordinate.

I have an easy time visualizing the kind of chaos a leader like Collins creates, I've worked for people who are chaotic and immature and seen them drive teams of competent and otherwise motivated men into the ground. The fact that the turnaround was so dramatic when Collins left gives me high hopes that a lot of our problems were psychological. I have no inside information, but heard a lot of smoke and a lot of it seems very believable given what has ultimately played out.

If Key is as bad as your questions imply, the only way to explain him beating Pitt, VT, Duke, UNC and being competitive with Georgia is that he's lucky! Like Bobby Dodd said, "I'd rather be lucky than good." We have tried everything at Tech except being lucky. I will be glad to see "some thrillers brewing the next time toe meets leather at Grant Field, brothers and sisters!"

I think we should just meme each other ruthlessly for a few years and stop caring so much what people think about us. 100% of football players, their families, and their coaches, know we're idiots. Let's have some fun.

Did you watch any of those games? Lucky is an understatement. Not sure we were competitive with the mutts lol

1. Limitations from Collins with relying on transfer guys from the beginning instead of building true depth. Also injuries, lots of injuries.

3. It was too early in his career

4. They announced portal entry because he hadn't been named coach (although this is still in play)

5. He isn't 62 years old
