Asked about his players’ seeming lack of energy, Johnson responded: “With this team, honestly, I can never tell. I thought we were ready to play, but clearly we weren’t. I hope we can play harder than that.”

With this team, honestly, I can never tell. I don't like this. It is CPJ's responsibility to be able to tell. If he can't tell then who can? The fans in sections 105, 106 and 107? The Swarm? Who?

Feel free to call me a dumbass, but i just don't see what the big deal is about this quote. Seems like standard motivational speech to me. He's challenging them to be tough and consistent.

This quote really upsets me. With this team I can never tell?? What's the deal Coach?

You have had most of these players for 2 years. How can't you tell? Are you blaming it on the players? I sure hope not. There is plenty of blame to go around.

Already done that twice this season, hopefully the third time's the charm.

You do that crap in the locker room. Not publicly. This isn't a pro team. This is college. These are kids.

Well what's PJ supposed to say? "I remain convinced that they were ready to play," or "I knew that they weren't ready to play and I doubt they can improve," or "We obviously played great all night and the team should feel good about it?" He'll shoulder plenty of blame throughout the week, and the above quote is not inconsistent with that. He's been motivating college kids for almost 30 years and he obviously knows something about how to do it.

But I'll stay open minded on this. If I'm missing something about this quote, point it out to me. Don't be afraid to spell it out for me.

I'll agree. I'm going to reserve judgment until I see how the team plays next Saturday.

Suffice it to say, though, I definitely want to see a hungrier and better motivated team on The Flats.

I think the coach is somewhat separating himself from the team in this quote.

"With this team, I can't tell." He is basically saying that he is on board to win, but he can't tell if the players on board. That's how I see it.

I am not going to say that you are wrong because we are both just interpreting here and I understand what you're saying. But, let's look at the quote again: “With this team, honestly, I can never tell. I thought we were ready to play, but clearly we weren’t. I hope we can play harder than that.”

To me, that quote doesn't even allocate blame. He's saying that he thought they were ready and he was wrong. He's not saying whether that's his fault or theirs. And based on other things I have seen or heard PJ say, I do believe that he would (and will) freely acknowledge that it is the head coach's fault if the players are not ready to play.

I also think that PJ is being candid about how frustrated and dumbfounded he is about everything. This is a guy that expected his team to come out and play with more fire, and he was upset when they didn't. Again, it's not clear who he is upset with the most, but I am willing to bet that he is closely examining his own performance.

The only thing he said that's even close to being critical of the players is that he hopes we can play harder. Well, of course he does. So do I. So do you, I'm willing to bet. I believe that he would (and will) acknowledge that he can do a better job of putting them in better position to play harder (i.e. by giving them a better gameplan etc).

But you could be right. Maybe I am biased in favor of PJ and maybe he does have a Charlie Weis type attitude that I will grow to hate. Let's see what he says as the week goes on though.

Yeah I agree with you GEHJ. Neither of us can't rush to conclusions. We will only find out in due time.

He said "we", not "they". Doesn't sound like dissing the kids.
