Lanier to Redshirt

So Lanier is redshirting. That means we have both him and TJ Barnes, both 325+ playing with each other as freshmen to seniors. It will be like what BC did with Raji and the other DT, except that Lanier and Barnes will be bigger and better. Redshirting Lanier is the smart move.

1) They could be better..we do not know. Raji is a tremendously special talent...GT has never had a DT go in the first two rounds of the NFL draft...Raji was the 9th pick in the first round and Brace was the 8th pick in the second round.
2) Barnes is one year ahead of Lanier...so they would not play together as seniors.
3) Lanier would be a senior along with Shawn Green and Denzel McCoy...if Green and McCoy do not redshirt. Green is probably more ready to play than McCoy at the next level...to this point.
4) Lets manage our expectations...most colleges wanted Barnes and Lanier as OL's, not DT's...we will see how they continue to develop to improve their stamina and overall physical condition....and footwork.
