Larry Munson Retires

I've actually enjoyed listening to Munson several times, he's one of the last of the old-school type announcers who could really paint an oral picture of the stadium, the field, the whole panoply of a day of college football. He's always been fairly respectful of Tech and complimented us on good plays frequently.
You've got to be joking.

I listened to Munson's broadcast of the GSU game this year, on my way up to the lake. No less than every three minutes he'd say "Dogs in Red, Georgia Southern in White," because otherwise he couldn't remember which team was which. He got the player's names wrong, half the time didn't know which players were which numbers, completely failed to tell you what formation UGA was in unless it was an I, in which case he'd just say, "And we're in an I," with no information about WR alignments. He was even worse when UGA was on defense.

I'm not saying the guy wasn't better in his prime, but for the last DECADE Munson has been a laughing stock. Some of the best pregame I ever heard for Tech was when Wes was hanging out with an ESPN journalist and the ESPN guy started making fun of Munson. "Hob Nail Boot? Really?"

Munson's a joke. It's entertaining that they didn't fire him until this year, though.

Get the picture.
Jackets in gold helmets, white jerseys and running all over the hedges today. My God, we can't stop this offense. ...
Stafford back to pass. He's looking ... Michael Johnson has him again. (Silence. Followed by morose sounding Munson). His 10th sack of the day. This gold-crested wave has swarmed over the Dogs.
(Followed by Munson's last empty whiskey bottle hitting the floor in the booth ....)

I was hoping for a non-media-friendly take on Munson, maybe some old gaffes and stories re-told. Thanks goldeagle (and GTKyle for the link)
